Brain Teasers
Periodically 79
I am periodically the number 79. Long ago some attempted to make me from 29, but learned it couldn't be done. If you add me to 80 I appear to be 47 temporarily.
What am I?
What am I?
Answer
GoldGold is represented by the number 79 on the Periodic table of elements. Long ago alchemists tried to make gold from copper.(number 29) If you add gold to mercury (number 80) it will appear to be silver for a time.

This is the first chemical question I can answer on this site. This was an awesome teaser!
This teaser, although it was easy, was fun and enjoyable. Great job!
This was hard for me! Well I thought it was incredible and I added it to my faves!
this teaser was so easy
Isnt this supposed to be in the science category?
i don't like science and the table of elements. too hard for me. i also thought it should be under the science catagory, although that might give it away.
easy, easy, easy!
clever!
this was totally hard but when igot the answer i thought DUH
that was pretty easy even 4 me!
THATS A GOOD ONE
Well my brain must be made of some sort of mushy element because I had no clue at all. You guys must all be science buffs!
Very clever, i had no idea it was elements you wrote about. Awesome job on this one!
I thought that people wanted to make lead into gold.
It's funny... I didn't know the numbers for sure, but this is just one of those rated-harder puzzles that took no effort on my part. Just the wording alone gave it away, I suppose, even without the periodic, though once I thought about it that was a dead giveaway.
Very good! I liked this one. When I saw 29 I was thinking it should be 82 - I had Lead on my mind.
Thanks!
Jim
Thanks!
Jim
It was easy. Just pull up a periodic chart and look.
My Idea:
Something '79' related to time. I was misled by the word 'periodically'!
Good Job!

Good Job!
Nice one. Thanks for posting.
I knew that it had to do with the table of elements, but I wasn't about to go hunt down my high-school chemistry books and charts to figure out which elements they were.
This was pretty good and informative!

Good Quiz. My Chemical background made it easy for me.
I really liked this one.
GREAT teaser - I had to look up Hg, but got the rest!!!! Got my brain working!!!!
I knew it had to do with elements, but I had to pull up a periodic table to find out WHICH element.
Clever!! Good job!! =)
I don't know the numbers , but the wording gave it away. Very good teaser even for this dummy.
Awesome! Great Teaser!!!
Koolio
golden ! i actually got it looking at it ! and i thought i hated chemistry !
Very easy and fun!
I had to figure it out, but I succeeded! (But I thought alchemists tried to make gold out of lead?)
i no this is off topic, but i lik gems n gold n stuff lik that cuz itz pretty n shiny and they cost a lot but i lik 2 pretend that i hav such jewels cuz mah sister likz 2 play games lik that
haha thatz... odd, i guess but good point, fathead (dont mean 2 be rude, but that IS ur username, right?) srry bout that
This isn't my favorite type of teaser but the majority of folks did like it! As for me, once again, the comments provided an ELEMENT of surprise and a good laugh! Come on Doehead - don't let me down - let's hear your comment on this one!
My response to gayle. My chemistry studies in college made this one worth about $1740 an ounce. I'll take about 2 tons if your giving it away.
Didn't need the periodic table; the line 'long ago some attempted to make me from....' gave it to me. Didn't matter from which element; the "me" was gold!
ok............
thats..... odd i guess?
wat wuz that all bout???????

This one was fun . . . possibly my favourite yet. I knew the answer was gold, but the copper clue threw me off (I too was thinking lead, but I know copper is 29). I didn't know Hg was 80, but I did know Au was mixed with Hg during gilding processes & while I didn't know the alloy would look like Ag, I assumed it must based on the clues.
Great, fun teaser!
Great, fun teaser!
Not a science person and we never learned the periodic table when I went to school, at least not in any of my classes so this was a big nothing to me.
Got the answer but not all the details that went with it.
Guessed it from the title. There is little I recall from HS chem classes, but there are a few elements whose numbers I remember.
Chemistry classes in the past made this one doable.
Just downloaded the Periodic Table. Mybe next time I will have a clue.
Good idea, Catmom. I'll do that next time, too! Have a wonderful day!
Ditto to wordmama's comment.
This was OK but I like the actual teasers better. I had to look up #79 on the Periodic Table to get the answer. Although I had the Periodic Table in school I have been out too long and do not remember all the elements numbers.
That was a really good trivia question! Well worded and fun to figure out! I'll be honest, I realized it had to do with the periodic table and then had to look them each up. Still a lot of fun!
Easy for me ("periodically" gave it away), but definitely fun. Thank you!
