Brain Teasers
Mysterious Loss
At a train station in Sydney, Australia, an intelligent rich man was awaiting his upper class rail transport. He was sorting through his wallet and pulled out credit cards, receipts, and $200 in cash.
An egotistical scam artist (and a talented one at that) approached the man and said to him, "I'll bet you, on all the money in your wallet, that I can get a packet of chips out of that snack machine without inserting any money!"
The rich man, who was intrigued by this 'talent', readily agreed.
The scam artist walked over to the snack dispenser, stuck his hand up through the compartments, and a chip packet fell out.
The rich man was amazed, but being a faithful businessman, stuck to his word, yet the scam artist walked off without a penny.

Hint
What was in his wallet at the time?Answer
The rich man had already removed all the money and items from his wallet before he made the bet. Therefore, when he gave the scammer all the money in his wallet, it totaled $0!Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

that was way too ez. it was funny though!
got it strait away far to easy but a good one tho
to easy figured it out w/ no problem
Oh. I thought that it was because the rich man had no pennies in his wallet. Only bills, nickels, quarters, and dimes.

That one is like the one they like to try to pull in any city. the guy comes up to you and says "I bet I can tell you the exact place that you got those shoes" If you Agree he will say "You got them on your feet in (fill in city name)"

Decent Teaser - easy to solve but it did require a minute's thought. Puzzle on!
Got that one fairly quickly, but good all the same
i have seen a teaser like this before but this was nice and easy
Too easy word play, but a good attemp. If you could have added a little more in that paragraph that could have distracted the reader, they might not have guessed it.
Nice, but Way Too Easy
nice and simple just the way i like them
cool one
this is the same as one from a week or so ago that was told badly except the punch line was correct this time (in the last one the crook got the money)...no contest, knew it immediately
THIS IS A DUPLICATE OF:
#11263 What Song?
A man is sitting in a pub feeling rather poor. He sees the man next to him pull a wad of £50 notes out of his wallet.
(bla bla bla)
The rich man goes home poor. The poor man goes home rich.
THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE 140+ COMMENTS FOR THAT TEASER:

it was a good one but technically its wrong. if u read the actual wording the poor man went home poor and he rich man went home rich. the bet was for the money in his wallet and yet he pulled it out and was holding the wad in his hand. they actully bet for no money.
Posted by ixilight_raven Jan 26, 2005
(edit)....the bet was for the money in his wallet and yet he pulled it out and was holding the wad in his hand. they actully bet for no money."
lol, my first thought, before I finished the puzzle, was that the question was "poor man on the bet, but no money, how?"
(edit)
Posted by super_duper08 Apr 19, 2005
(edit)
....cus the rich man took it outta his wallet so if he didn't have anything else in it then they woulda gone home with the same amount of money
Posted by gagurl1617 Apr 19, 2005
If the rich man pulls all of his money out of his wallet, then the poor man has won nothing! ( He bet on the money "in" his wallet)
Posted by timilee Apr 21, 2005
This was cute
But i agree with the folks that point out that the money had been pulled out of the wallet.
If it said 'all the money in your hand...' then it would work better.
Posted by GuinevereIsmene Apr 22, 2005
He took the money out of his wallet--was there more money in there? But good teaser otherwise.
AND THIS (#11263) WAS REUSED AGAIN JUST THE OTHER DAY
I don't want to be a stick in the mud, but the first few teasers that i submitted were 'rejected' for being 'duplicates' of other teasers.
...so this stands out like a sore thumb!

This was soooooooo easy, but then again, I enjoy easy trick problems!
way too easy, but I do have a question....if he was really an "intelligent" man, would he have really taken all of money and credit cards out in public view like that????
Personally, i don't think this was as good as "What Song?" But i still enjoyed it.
How fun
sooo....the joke--or was it a joke?--wasn't hard
but what would've been MORE interesting is how the scam artist got the bag of chips (not to mention more useful in my opinion :p)

This riddle was really easy and obvious.

I thought it was pretty easy too, but that helps build my self esteem But like one of the other comments, I'd be more interested to know how he got the bag of chips out of the machine!!!
i think that was good
BUT
you didn't ask us a question there for how could there have been an answer
BUT

so true "brain_dead" so true It's amazing what gets past even ME.
I got really confused by that one. I thouhgt it had something to do with ethe SCAM ARTIST.
pretty good!
2EZ
this was a good trick
i liked it, but it was really easy...
Painfully easy ...
BUT, it should be noted, nowhere in the brain teaser is it stated that the businessman had EMPTIED his wallet. We were only provided with a list of what he withdrew. Who is to say how much he left inside the wallet?
Overall, an extremely poor brain teaser.

i havnt read that teaser yet :S
i (again) got this from my teacher and she told me to post it here, sorry if it does seem like a duplicate but i didnt know there was a similar one :S
also, if you ever come to australia, you can hot-glue two 5 cent coins together (must use special kind of glue which is heavier) and it tricks the machine into thinking its a $2 coin, but that costs you 10 cents.
Another way, as we discovered in a Mechanics class, is to get something similar to a coathanger, bend the end into a spiral and stick it up the machine. If you can get it through the first lever compartment then all you have to do is knock the chips down, and hold the compartment open with one hand.
It also helps if there is no flappy thing at the entrance of the machine.
also, i like having easy AND hard teasers, not everyone has a brain like einstein, so for those who have normal IQ's (such as myself) i like making easy but fun teasers, for those, who insist on having such a difficult teaser, i create harder ones, if this was 'way too easy' for ya, try my 'one word answer' teaser

taya,
i believe that this is a darling teaser, there maybe duplicates all over the world, but, no mind is its own, and what i mean by this is that there is always gonna be someone like you, in which case, this applies to your teaser. good job

Next time tell us what we are supposed to do, please
I love it and am adding it to my favorites
good lord...
i thought he walked away without a penny because there was no pennies in the man's wallet. good teaser!
haha- I thought he didn't get the money as he was arrested before he got paid for stealing Chip!!!
it could be because he didn't walk off with any pennies, he walkeed off with it all in cards, receipts, and cash.
there is no question
I thought he gave the man his receipts.
A classic. Good one.
I didnt know what the question was. the questions need to be said
The end should probably say "How did he do this?"
But otherwise, this was far too easy but still mildly entertaining

Good one.
I'm just bothered with the 'duplicate' issues stated above.
Nevertheless, Good Job.

Very weak!!!!
Aha! Be careful how you phrase things!
I never read another one like this one, but it was still too easy.
One word, "NICE".
Not sure this was a fair teaser, but I guess a trick is a trick. Thanks for posting.
I am more curious to see how the scam artist got the bag of chips from the vending machine without putting money in. What I need now is a bag of chips
Got it quickly, and I like those! Good job.
Thanks.~Z

Excuse me, but did you not give away the answer in the second sentence? Seems you think we are in grade school. That was too, too. TOO easy! Bummer!
AROB! 2 EZ Hi to CT and PA friends!
AROB. A good teaser for the kids that are getting ready to start kindergarden. To my friends G & A . Have a wonderful day.
Way too easy. What is AROB ?
It was way too easy back in 2011 and it still is. It felt like kindergarten stuff.
He really only has to remove the cash from his wallet, not the other items. Receipts and credit cards are not money.
Alternate answer: The scam artist walked away with two $100 bills, but no pennies.

Oh I see now that you are only mentioning the other items because they were literally "pulled out" at the beginning of the sentence. Nevermind my first paragraph in the previous post
beginning of the teaser* not sentence.
It's very, very early -.-'
It's very, very early -.-'
Easy.
Easy, even I figured it out.
Answer was very obvious.
Maybe easy, but I still liked it. Good one to ask of my grandchildren. Kids come up with wonderful responses. Thanks for posting!
I never saw this one before. I thought it was cute. Pretty easy for most by the comments, but a good family quiz for all ages.
Fun, easy and enjoyable teaser.
Fun, easy and entertaining teaser; I got this one very quickly again just as I did three years ago.
Lol i got it from the hint
