Brain Teasers
Three Statements
Which of these three statements are true?
1. All humans are mortal. Socrates is human. This implies that Socrates is mortal.
2. The next number in the series 3968, 63, 8, 3... is 2.
3. The next number in the series 1, 3, 6, 10... is 16.

2. The next number in the series 3968, 63, 8, 3... is 2.
3. The next number in the series 1, 3, 6, 10... is 16.
Answer
Statements 1 and 2 are true; statement 3 is false.Statement 1 is the simplest form of syllogism, and it's true.
In statement 2, each number is the square root of its preceding number increased by 1, and it's true.
In statement 3, the differences of neighboring terms are 2, 3, 4... and the next number should be 15, so it's false.

ummmmmmmm . i don't think you're right . i'm not a math genius , by any means but i do know how to follow directions and use a calculator .
according to your explanation #2 was a product of the square root of the previous number and one .
therefore if i find the square root of 3968 and add 1 i should get 63 .
LET'S SEE ...
square root of 3968 = 62.99
+ 1.
______
63.99
even if the answer were 63
square root of 63 = 7.93 + 1 = 8.93
point being , it doesn't work out . even when you round the numbers you wouldn't round that far down ! i think this teaser definately needs a revision .

Too easy.
#2's explanation was a bit ambiguous. You have to add the one prior to taking the square root.
Um... I don't think your right either, but it was a good idea.
no, lips means u dont add one, u just round up. like, if it was 2.83, then u round to 3. 7.93 becomes 8, and 1.73 becomes 2
Actually, Tammy, it was correct as written. As paul says, the phrasing was perhaps ambiguous, but you are supposed to add 1 to the previous number and then take the square root, not take the square root of the previous number and round up.
I thought it was easy, but what do I know.
The series in statement 2 would be true regardless of which of three actions you take. The curious thing would be learning a sixth number in the series.
If nextn = squareroot(n)rounded, the sixth number is 1.
If nextn = squareroot(n)roundedUP, the sixth is 2.
If nextn = squareroot(n+1),
the sixth is 3*0.5 ~ 1.73.
Is there a rule that says the first number needs to be a unique start to a series? When I google for answer, I am reminded these so-called series are really finite sequences and not series at all.
