MTHEE Take letters 3 & 4
TTLERA Take letters 1 & 2
XETNDE Take letters 1 & 6
AYL Take letter 1
Unscramble the letters you collected... what do you get?
Answer
MTHEE Take letters 3 & 4 - THEME, take E,MTTLERA Take letters 1 & 2 - RATTLE, take R,A
XETNDE Take letters 1 & 6 - EXTEND, take E,D
AYL Take letter 1, LAY, take L
Unscramble the above to get 'Emerald'.
The Emerald is a bright green gemstone and the word 'Emerald' itself comes from a Greek phrase meaning 'green gemstone'. It is believed to have healing properties and royalty always had their treasure chests filled with emeralds because of this property. The colour green, widely found even in Mother Nature, imparts a feeling of freshness, vividness and clarity to the emerald.

FUN! I love these!
Thanks Winner!
I like these too, but be careful with letters that could be unscrambled multiple ways. For instance, I unscrambled the second word to be latter, not rattle. Just a thought...
Would have been a great teaser but I also unscrambled the 2nd word as 'latter' - this messed up the whole thing 4 me!
Why don't you change that word to another one which cannot be confused?

AHH, THE GOOD OLD BOYS CLUB,
THE CORRECTOR TELLS THE SUBMITTER HOW GOOD THE TEASER IS, BUT IN FACT, AS DULY POINTED OUT BY THE FIRST THREE COMMENTER'S OF THE DAY, IT IS FLAWED.

A LITTLE LESS BACK PATTING AND A LITTLE MORE DILIGENCE PLEASE

Talk about FLAWED. Where are your teasers Imurrary? You have the points to submit, but obviously not the talent nor the ability, just a mouth. A little green with envy no doubt.
A fine teaser. In my Scottish highlands, people wear green as a mark of honor.

I don't like cryptograms. Sorry.
Yeah, I got Rattle right away, and I never get these right. I am excited tht I got it on my first try.
I liked it as a little brain exercise in the AM. I agree though, I also got "latter" first, and really banged my head against the wall before I went back to see if any words could be unscrambled in two ways. Soon as I got "rattle" I knew what the answer was. I always think that maybe the words to be unscrambled should also have the gemstone theme, or some other theme, instead of trying to only use words that have one unscrambled solution.
In any case, I enjoyed it. Thanks Brainster!

Good teaser. I considered the name of the teaser and counted the number of letters involved and came up with the correct answer just by the process of elimination. Fun even tho "flawed."
Good teaser, and I'm angry with myself that once I got "latter" I didn't consider anything else. And, here I am with emerald as my birthstone. I DO like unscrambled puzzles - keep 'em coming! Thanks!
PS While I think making a correction is ok, criticizing the puzzle is rude! If you don't care for the puzzle, make one up yourself!
A Fantastic teaser! Hey everyone, if you are a puzzle solver, you will know that working a crossword has many answers that will fit. It is up to the solver to pick the correct route to make it fit.. Otherwise, you aren't puzzle solvers, just people who believe the answers should fall in to place, ALL of the time. Dreamers! (Just shaking my head) BTW! Keep up the terrific work! I enjoy figuring out which answer should fit.
It's a sad commentary on our perception of problem-solving when we are unwilling to unravel a simple puzzle and demand an easy answer to stroke our lazy ego.
I'm a strict constructionist. The 2nd jumble should yield either rattle or latter but not both. If every jumbled word could be decoded in more than one way, the number of permutations for the final answer would be horrendous. I'm surprised, but I'm with Imurray and others on this.
loved it! great teaser!
I second that, Pizazz!
Fun, but I guess I find these a bit too easy.
It seem that the "if it isn't instantly mental gratifying then IT'S flawed...not mes," that haunt this site and the "if you don't agree with me, I'll log in as someone else and agree with myself" types, are out in force today.
What a waste over such fun little teaser. Just takes a little extra thinking at times. Look a little deeper and you see more in each gem. Keep up the good work. And by the way, ancient Egyptians colored the floors of their temples green. Why? I have no idea, just a bit of green trivia to share.

I'm not usually good at these, but I got this teaser right away. Lots of fun.
easy peasy lemon squeezy.
Great Puzzle! Some will get it right away and some won't. Just make sure you complete your real work for the day people!
I too got "latter," but by figuring out the others the obvious answer is "emerald"
Good job!
Good job!
As the second word could be "latter" I was spinning my wheels on bad clues. Next time be sure that your words can only be unscrambled to one word.
Thanks all for the feedback. Lmurray, I don't consider myself to be perfect (I think only God is!). I have no problems if someone finds a grammatical or any other type of error in my teaser and corrects it. I can only appreciate that they took the time and effort to do so. As always, I look forward to seeing your first teaser on the site.
I have to laugh at how serious some people get about these things. I thought it was fun. I couldn't get the second word so skipped it, got E,M,E,D,L from the ones I had solved, then just back tracked and figured out the second word. Isn't that what this is all about... using your brain?! Lighten up and enjoy your day!!!
this was toatally lame
and boring
i was not satisfied

i guess it was cool i am not going to say it is lame though.
Hey Brainster...I love your 'gem series'. I solved it with 2 words to go...puzzlers are going to be going through gems with every word solved - and sometimes it 'can only be___'.
It was frickin' hard when I got the e-mail, but when I looked on the page and saw it was the Gemstone Series, I was able to get it. Fun.
ah, the emerald! My birthstone...and proud. Great teaser brainy!
Easy, but fun!
I agree with Pizzazz: What's wrong with stretching your brain just a LITTLE bit to come up with the answer??
btw, thanks for connecting the title and the answer!

I also agree with the people who aren't afraid to scratch their brains a little to arrive at a correct answer. Why does the answer have to be so absolute - what makes a teaser out of that? Great job Brainster, and I have loved the info you have given on your gem series. I am enjoying them. More please.
flawed? FLAWED?! Wow, I've seen people (hi, lmurray!) complain that a teaser was too easy, and I was sure I've seen a suggestion to improve the challenge by having more than one way to solve certain parts (but only one correct way, of course).
I don't see how having multiple possibilities makes the "the number of permutations for the final answer ... horrendous". Especially when it's just one word that's got multiple jumbles. I know every time I've been stuck on a puzzle like this one, if I'm stuck on the final assemblage of letters, I always go back and check whether any of the jumbles that make it up could be interpreted in another way.
Of course, I'm no anagram pro, and sometimes they really get to me. I've been bitten by a WOLF once, not seeing the FOWL it was hiding because it was obscured by the FLOW, and then there was a time that I got attacked by WOLVES when all I thought I saw were VOWELS.
For this puzzle though, it's quite possible that I am only laughing because the LATTER choice for #2 didn't RATTLE me.

Also: after I got the 4 jumbles, and saw the letters, I was very pleased when the EMERALD jumped out at me. I've had fun with the others in the gemstone series, and was happy to see another!! Good puzzle!
Excellent, fun teaser. Enjoyed working on it. Thanks for posting.
hmmm.. am i the only silly banana that took the letters away and worked feaverishly with the remaining letters ( As in THE not ME from the first word)... i got the words just ended up in my own world of nothing to do with Emerald.. dopey me..
keep them coming though!! love it.. and now i know what i am doing.. ;0
Good puzzle and I got it because I recognized we needed the letter R - so I switched latter to rattle. I didn't get it in 2007 Gee, I was dumb back then!
I don't understand why they would repost this puzzle with the same error it had in 2007?
I thought it was great...rattle or latter. Good job!
I got this one easily because the Emerald is my birthstone, and after a few words I knew the answer. Latter, rattle didn't throw me, but I can see how it may have slowed some people down. I really enjoyed this one and look forward to many more.
Really, I don't see what all the fuss is about!
I thought it was supposed to be a puzzle, not solve-by-numbers fun in a Humpty-Dumpty magazine.

I groused about latter vs. rattle back in 2007. But this time around, I didn't have any trouble and enjoyed the teaser a lot.
Well, that was easy!! After the first word I knew it was going to be emerald so getting rattle mixed up with latter was not a problem for me. I just looked at what the next letters to save were going to be and used that clue to unscrambled them easily.
just the right amount of thinking for a Monday morning
Not a gem, as it was much to easy.
I have been hanging around this site for years! And that just proves that
I love it here! Met some very nice people and occasionally get the right
answer! Thanks, folks!

PS Hi AuntieSis, if you show up after I leave! Hope all is well in your world!
Life is great. Emerald is my birth stone, so it clicked quickly.
It's 30 am USA CST and, other than bro Jay and myself, there is only ONE other Braingle member signed on.

Are we the only ones who care about this?
And we need to be careful about what we say and how we say it.
Dad, the original BadBunnee, was censured and eventually kicked off Braingle for pointing out some serious flaws in the editorial system that was going to doom Braingle.
Bro Jay (BadBunnee02) is now carrying neg "Karma" (hilarious !!) points for recently attempting the same.
Does anybody else care that Braingle is dying?

I got it after unscrambling the second word. Fun!
same for me as Zykezex..got it after two 'unscrambles'. Fun, but just a bit too easy
Fun, easy and enjoyable teaser. I do not always sign in to play the Braingles as I get them in my E-Mail and often play without signing in. Others may do the same as me.
mrbill .....
Thanks for the "heads up" on the no-sign-in option. I was aware of that but the unusual event of only one sign-in SHOWN was so unique that I had to comment.
My family (Dad [original BadBunnee], brother [BadBunnee02], and myself) have been on Braingle for over ten years and last night was the FIRST time we've EVER witnessed only ONE other sign-on SHOWN.
And we have - because of our locales (Thailand and central USA) - signed on at all hours of USA CST.
Sad .... very, very sad ...
But, again, thanks for the reminder.
AND ... we are STILL
laughing ......

The second scramble could also become "LATTER."
It was a treasure hunt due to the second scrambled word. Due the latter, there was no gemstone to be found.
Fun, easy and entertaining teaser; I got this one very quickly.
I do Jumbles during my lunch break. This was easy.
