Hint
The title is a hint. Also: Most products (such as foods) have UPC (Universal Product Code) numbers. What OTHER "number" on products are we familiar with?
Answer
Serial Numbers ("Cereal Numbers").While the numbers, AND the cereal names are "made up", they well represent names of real breakfast grain-cereals as well as representations of serial numbers.
The title in the hint is "Read the Box", where such numbers would be found.
There is also a HUGE hint in the body; wherein is mentioned the "serial" nature of the numbers. While the numbers (themselves) are not sequential, the 01, 02 and 03 enumeration is (serial). "Serial" means items following one-to-another.
The phrase "Serial Number" is a common expression used to denote the unique identification number given a wide variety of consumer goods. In the mass-consumption market (such as foods and clothing), the UPC (see above) is used in place of a serial number although each item, such as each box of cereal, or each carrot, or each sock is not uniquely identified.
