Since the process of creating an avatar has changed, I thought that making a new sticky on avatars might help. There are also some instructions here on creating your forum signature and personal message, since we seem to get requests on how to make those regularly. I have written instructions on how to get to the screens to edit your avatar and signature, and also included the links.

AVATARS:
An avatar is a small graphic below your name in your posts. The size should be less than or at 100 x 100 pixels and less than or at 50 k. The file types supported for custom avatars are JPEG and GIF. Also, all avatars should be family friendly.

So how do you get one?

Up at the top right of the screen, you will see your username. Directly beneath that, you will see a link that says My Account.
Click on this link, it will take you to a page where you can change all sorts of preferences. The second link is Edit Personal Information. Click this link, at the bottom of the page you will see the word Avatar:. Beneath this will be a blank box, with a button next to it that says browse.

From here you have two options for getting your avatar. You can select an avatar from the Braingle gallery, or you can upload your own from your computer.

To use an avatar from the gallery:
Click the link marked Avatar Gallery, which is beneath the box with the browse button. This will take you to a screen where you can choose a gallery, either cartoon or random.
After you find the avatar you want in the gallery, just click on it. Depending on your browser, you may then get a pop up box that says, "Are you sure you want to select this as your avatar?" If so, click yes. Braingle will automatically set this graphic as your avatar. Your new avatar should now be up.

To use your own custom avatar:
Many people find a good avatar using Google or Yahoo image search, or many of the free avatar sites that are available. Once you have found your avatar, right click on the picture and highlight "Save As". Choose a location to save your new avatar on your computer where you will be able to easily find it, such as My Documents or My Pictures. After you have saved your new avatar, follow the instructions above to get to the Edit Personal Information page. Under the bolded word Avatar:, you will see the box with the browse button next to it. Click the browse button, a box will pop up and take you to the files on your own computer. Select the file of your new avatar from this box, and click OK.
You should see letters in the previously blank box next to the browse button now. Click Update Account, and your new avatar should be up.

FORUM SIGNATURES, AND PERSONAL MESSAGES:

A forum signature is one or two lines of text that is displayed after each of your posts. A personal message is one or two lines of text that appears next to your avatar on your public page. Only plain text is allowed, no pictures or color formatting will show up in signatures or personal messages. All signatures & personal messages should be family friendly. These two can be different messages, and each will have to be put in separately.

To put in your forum signature:
Up at the top left of the screen, you will see your username. Directly beneath that, you will see a link that says My Account.. Click on this link, it will take you to a page where you can change all sorts of preferences. The second link is Edit Personal Information.Click this link, the second box from the top will have the bolded word Signature: before it. Type in your signature, and click Update Account, and you are done.

To put in your personal message:
Follow the above instructions to get to your Edit Personal Information screen. The first box will have the bolded words Personal Message: next to it. Type in your personal message and click Update Account, and you are done.

Happy Posting!

Microsoft Paint

Just open up your picture file, set up the text bar how you want, and type in whatever you want.

On your signature how do you make the text a certain color or put a smiley face on there? Can you even do that?

Only plain text is allowed in the signatures. No markup is parsed and therefore will just show up as is.

First of all, please don't post in caps, because caps, like we all know, are internet for yelling and nobody likes to get yelled at.

And for the avatar thing, if it isn't a jpg or a gif you simply cannot use it. also, if you haven't saved the file to your computer, it also can't be used.

If you don't know if they are or not, just right click on the picture, click "save as", and save it. it explains that in the directions above.

Can anybody list some websites for finding good avatars? I'm not into cartoons. Would like something "fantasy-like"..... perhaps a mythological figure.... or something relating to the earth and nature..... especially trees.

And how does one know if they are copyrighted or for public use? And whether it's ok to modify or customize them?

I appreciate any help i can get. Who's the resident expert? LOL

Thanks,
'Livva

Oh, well thanks metaldude. So you have to save it to your computer before you can make it your avi?
