Well October 24th has arrived and we are getting close to Halloween. Do you have any party plans or a good idea for a costume? One year I dyed a sheet orange, put elastic at the top and bottom and sewed the top and bottom of the sheet together. Drew a big smile on it, put large dark glasses on, plus a black top hat. Yeah I know, a lazy pumpkin but for some reason or other the people liked it and I walked away with first place. So anyhow, hope everyone is getting ready for it. I used to decorate the outside of my home, but don't have the ambition to do so any more.

Some of the well known celebrities who were born on October 24th are:

Drake, 30, born Aubrey Drake Graham he is a former Degrassi TV actor who became a rap phenomenon after his album Thank Me Later went platinum in 2010. His third studio album Nothing Was The Same was the seventh best selling album of 2013 in the US. In 2012 he provided the voice for Ethan on Ice Age: Continental Drift. His album Take Care popularized the phrase "YOLO," and the accompanying tour grossed over $42 million in 2012.

The Big Bopper, 1930 - Feb 3, 1959 (age 2, born Jiles Perry "J.P." Richardson, Jr., he was a DJ, singer, and songwriter who sang "Chantilly Lace" and wrote "White Lightning" and "Running Bear." He took the seat on the doomed airplane that was supposed to be for Waylon Jennings. He died in a plane crash with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens.

BD Wong, 56, starred on the television show, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Dr. George Huang. He is also known for his roles in the series Oz, Awake, and the Steven Spielberg classic Jurassic Park, alongside Sam Neill. He appeared in the film, The Karate Kid, Part II as Bradd Wong in his film debut. He was in the Broadway play, M. Butterfly for which he won a Tony Award in 1988.

Bob Kane, 1915 - Nov 3, 1998 (age 83), writer and comic book artist who collaborated with Bill Finger on the creation of the DC Comics "Batman" series. He was inspired by actor Douglas Fairbanks' version of Zorro and the film, "The Bat Whispers," from 1930. His idea for Batman's batsuit was inspired by the futuristic drawings of flying machines by Leonardo da Vinci. He was inducted into both the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame during the 1990s

And a few more names:

Sarah J. Hale 1788 - She wrote the poem "Mary Had A Little Lamb."

Today we have a California gal celebrating her birthday. I have had the pleasure of playing in numerous Werewolf games with caberet and let me tell you she can play a very mean game. She has been a member of Braingle since August 7, 2009, so she has been with us for a while. I particularly enjoy her byline by Dr. Seuss - "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. caberet's occupation is "Being a grown up..." I think a lot of us have that distinct feeling. So Caberet, Make a wish and give it wings. Dreams of bright, beautiful things. Dance through all, the fun filled hours. Don't forget, to smell the flowers. Share some love and birthday cake. All life joys are yours to take. HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Well I again am a day late and a dollar short. Spent most of yesterday in bed, but enough about me. Yesterday, October 29th two ladies had birthdays. They both live a ways south of me but I can't vouch too much saying they have had better or warmer weather than I have had here in Nebraska. Creamy_Suga calls Miami home. She has not been logged in for 25 days, so I am hoping she didn't meet up with that nasty hurricane, because I know she did play in Stewie Griffin's last Werewolf Game. I sat on the sidelines and watched this game - first 20 person game I had ever seen. Anyhow we here on Braingle do want to wish Creamy_Suga a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY, one day late, and hope that all is well down in Miami. Hope you can join us again, really soon. Oh yes, ice skating is her favorite hobbies - boy she could really have fun up here in Nebraska in the winter, but it makes me think that down in Florida, she must be going to a rink. We would have to tough it up here on the lakes and ponds.

OK, the second person I want to wish HAPPY BIRTHDAY to, for October 29, is one of my old friends who hasn't been on Braingle for a while, but of course I still see her on another place. Am hoping she will remember her password and come back and pay us a visit. I am speaking of kimberlykay from Texas. She has always had one of the sweetest bylines - "Life is like a box of crayons - some are sharp, some are dull, some have strange names, and they come in a variety of colors, but they all have to learn how to live in the same box." Isn't that cool? And so true nowadays. It does sound a bit like Forrest Gump however.

1966 - The National Organization for Women was founded.

What a great username for someone who was born on Halloween. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPOOKBOY! Love it! He is from Tennessee. He is a nomadic worker and minstrel. His interests are loving, living and Seinfeld. I believe he has been a member of Braingle longer than anyone I have seen - since March 2, 2004. Spookboy0 has an interesting byline, "It's not about me, and it's not about now." No, today, or at least tonight is about little people in costume, gathering as much as a month load of candies and sweets. I mean I'm short, but I don't think I could fool anyone. Darn!

1940 - The British air victory in the Battle of Britain prevented Germany from invading Britain.

THE ORIGINS OF HALLOWEEN:

The origins of Halloween date back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts lived the area known as Ireland, the United Kingdom and France about 2,000 years ago. The Celts celebrated their new year on November 1. This was the end of summer and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that during the season transition that the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On October 31, the Celts celebrated Samhain. This was when it was believed that ghosts of the dead returned to earth. Druids, or Celtic priests, would build bonfires where crops and animal sacrifices would be burned. Druids would make predictions about the future on this day. Costumes were worn, usually animal heads and skins.

By 43 A.D. the Romans had conquered most of Celtic territories. Two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the Celtic festival Samhain. Feralia was a day in late October when Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead was incorporated into the celebration of Samhain. The celebration of Pomona (the Roman goddess of fruit and trees) was also incorporated into the celebration of Samhain. The symbol of Pomona is the apple. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 as All Saint's Day. It is believed that this move was an attempt to replace the Celtic festival with a state sanctioned holiday that was related. This celebration was called All-hallows or All-hallowmas. The night before All Saint's Day (All-hallows) became known as All-hallows Eve...and eventually Halloween.

In A.D. 1000, the church made November 2 All Souls' Day. The day was to honor the dead. The celebration of All Souls' Day was similar to Samhain with bonfires, costumes and parades. The three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints' and All Souls' were called Hallowmas. In 1584, French explorer Jacques Cartier reported that he had found "gros melons." The word translated to "pompions" in English. The term eventually evolved into "pumpkin."

American eventually reinvented Hallowmas by removing the religious overtones and made it into a harvest festival. Colonial Halloween celebrations included ghost stories and mischief making. In the mid-1800s, Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house-to-house asking for food or money......later known as trick-or-treat. In the late 1800s, American began to steer Halloween away from "scary" things and moved toward parties. This led to most of the superstitious and religious aspects of Halloween to fall away. By the early 1900s Halloween parties focused primarily on festive costumes, games and foods. The first official citywide Halloween celebration was in Anoka, MN in 1921. By the 1950s, Halloween had evolved to a holiday that catered mainly to children. The practice of trick-or-treating was revived during this time.

Today, November 5th, Braingle member, Zinovia is celebrating her birthday. Her interests are writing and computer programming. She is a legal secretary from New Jersey. Zinovia does fly the Greek flag. Perhaps she is paying homage to her country of origin or parentage, because it is hard to work in New Jersey and live in Greece. Zinovia has not logged into Braingle for over a month so we are hoping she will return here to join us. Wishing you smiles, laughter, joy and cheer...New happiness that stays throughout the year. Hope your birthday brings all these and more...Filling life with surprises and joys galore!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZINOVIA!!

OK folks, as usual I am a day late and a dollar or two short. The flu bug sort of landed both feet right in my belly yesterday and I took to my bed. Today I am as week as a kitten. We have two people doing the birthday jig today. Kay Kay T is from Houston, TX, and a sophomore in high school. She joined our Braingle family on April 2, 2013. I hope you have enjoyed your day today, Kay Kay T.

And I shared a few words with cutebug to determine his exact day as it appears Nov 00 and since I didn't have that number, LOL, I went hunting. This gentleman states that he is 80 years old, that he isn't sure what his employment is, but his interests include enjoying life. cutebug's byline reads: "Enjoy everyday like it is your last. young boy." He does his exercises every day and also walks three miles four or five times a week. A widower he still does all his own housework and yardwork himself. WoW! To be that active. And I thought by being 74, I was probably one of the oldest members. Admiration there, cutebug. I hope you celebrated your birthday with family, friends, and other loved ones, with lots of pleasant surprises and blessings, and many, many more to come.

"There is perhaps no phenomenon which contains so much destructive feeling as moral indignation, which permits envy or hate to be acted out under the guise of virtue. - Erich Fromm" is the byline of today's birthday gal, ICUB42. Yes, she is my daughter. I have been so happy we have shared so much in life. ICU joined Braingle on February 28, 2007 so she will soon have in 10 years. She has played many WWGs and is somewhat feared as she has almost a sixth sense when it comes to spotting the wolves.

ICU is a mother and grandmother. She has played and enjoyed music since a young child. She has written several songs, lyrics and music which she wrote on her electronic keyboard. And then she found another keyboard, on a computer. Soon she was putting the two together, putting lyrics on video recordings, and also several of her own videos, particularly some lightening shows that Mother Nature provided. She is an amateur storm chaser and a great videographer in the beautiful Sand hills of Northern Nebraska. Oh yes, she says her location is Her World. So since she has also passed her musical talent on to her children I have created this birthday box to wish ICU a musical Happy Birthday. Hoping you enjoy your birthday with family, friends and other loved ones.

ICU, I am glad I made your birthday a little better. As Mama V I only wish I could make every day better for you Just remember, it is your world, look in that mirror and remember how strong you are and that I love you.

Sorry folks, I know this is the birthday box and not the chat line. I apologize for making these personal remarks, but I need to say again why I have missed some birthdays - sick again, but am trying to not spend my fourth Thanksgiving in the hospital. The doctor jumped my steroid up 400% so that kicked my sugar diabetes in the rear and after resting most of the day I had to call the hospital tonight to report sugars at 475. They adjusted my night insulin and now I am up trying to make sure I don't go from dangerously high to dangerously low. I am also getting a shot in the rear every day. Am sure that is just what my Home Health Nurse wanted to do was spend her Thanksgiving Day tending to me. And I know it is definitely screwing any "HEY I'M NOT IN THE HOSPITAL" plans I might have had for Tday.

I have been trying to work on birthday wishes for wolfpackw2 and was aware that my source let their license expire so I hesitated to use it. Found a new source and suddenly in the middle of it, it wouldn't let me give any information about some of the people who shared the birthdate. And now it is 11/23 and is Dr. Who's birthday. And we have 2 birthdays on the 24th, and one on the 28th. Froggy, thank you for wishing all the November birthday members a Happy Birthday. And Randy for your addition. I guess I should have put this in the "What Made you Frown".

So I will keep working on things and I do plan to send out the wishes, but maybe a day or two late. And if I don't get anything more typed here, I do want to wish everyone of our Braingle members A Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving.
Hugs to all. vlerma - GraymaV Mama V

Another of our young students in Braingle who haven't logged on for over 30 days, Fr3shBrainzzzz from UK. His birthday is November 28th. I do understand the students get so busy with school and such, but we really do miss them here on Braingle. FreshBrainzzzz states he has too many interest to write them down so the best we can do is invite him to come back and join us when he can. We all wish you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY celebrated with family, friends and other loved ones.
