Randy, thanks for sharing your "daddy memory". We see them on YouTube so it made me wonder if anyone happened to get a video for posterity? And what a wonderful thing for a daddy to share with his daughter - kind of a release from father to groom - that no one else can really put out. Glad we opened up your memory box and again, thanks for sharing.

MUSICAL TIDBITS THAT HAPPENED IN MUSICAL HISTORY ON THIS DATE:

I was not able to determine if Jerry Lewis above referred to Dean Martin's funny man or Jerry Lee Lewis of Great Balls of Fire fame. But given it was 20 years ago, I will assume it was Jerry Lewis.

Well folks, we have a threesome to wish Happy Birthday to today, December 11th. Two young guys from the US, sciencesteven and dawnrising, and then we have james05 from Canada. I just felt honery when I picked out the birthday card tonight. I hope you all get a kick out of it. I also was having a bit of trouble with my information gathering for the celebrities, and normally I would just take the time and redo them, but I may be going to the hospital in the morning, so I wanted to get this done and posted and not let it slip by me. I hope you all know who they are.

Celebrities with birthdays on December 11th:

Rey Mysterio, Jr. 41
Nikki Sixx, 57
Jermaine Jackson, 61
Mo'Nique. 48
Rita Moreno, 84
John Kerry, 72
Gary Dourdan, 49

Today in History:

1719 - The first recorded sighting of the aurora borealis took place in New England.
1844 - Dr. Horace Wells became the first person to have a tooth extracted after receiving an anesthetic for the dental procedure. Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas, was the anesthetic.
1894 - The world's first motor show opened in Paris with nine exhibitors.
1936 - Britain's King Edward VIII abdicated in order to marry American Wallis Warfield Simpson. He became the Duke of Windsor.

1946 - The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) was established by the U.N. General Assembly. The fund provides relief to children in countries devastated by war.
1951 - Joe DiMaggio (New York Yankees) announced his retirement from major league baseball. DiMaggio only played for the Yankees during his 13-year career.
1961 - The first direct American military support for South Vietnam occurred when a U.S. aircraft carrier carrying Army helicopters arrived in Saigon.
1981 - Muhammad Ali fought his last fight. He lost his 61st fight to Trevor Berbick.
1990 - Ivana Trump was divorced from Donald Trump after 12 years of marriage.
1991 - Salman Rushdie, under an Islamic death sentence for blasphemy, made his first public appearance since 1989 in New York, at a dinner marking the 200th anniversary of the First Amendment (which guarantees freedom of speech in the U.S.)

2001 - U.S. Attorney General Ashcroft announced the first federal indictment directly related to the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. Zacarias Moussaoui was charged with six conspiracy charges. Moussaoui was in custody at the time of the attacks.
2001 - Ted Turner purchased 12,000 acres in Nebraska for Bison ranches. This was put here simply because my daughter, ICUB42, lives very near some of the buffalo and my grandson's sister-in-law's husband works for Mr. Turner. Beautiful country!

So Braingleland is wishing all three of you very Happy Birthdays with family, friends and other loved ones and may you have many, many more birthdays to come.

I hope you will allow me to use this forum this one time to wish a very special person in my life a Happy Birthday. I don't think I saw a restriction on who we might wish a happy birthday too.
If you know me at all, you would know I am not doing this to get a moment in the limelight or for any comments... nor do I wish to put a downer in anyone's other great day they may be experiencing around now, because for the person I wish HB to today, he would not want that at all!

I just want to remember this one day in history... at least for me.

Today would have been his 70th birthday; he did not live to see it.

He was very much loved by not only his family but so many people that I am still hearing about them.
He did not complain about the illness that took his life.
He did not point blame to anyone or anything, nor did he curse God for putting him in the body that finally failed him.

As his body shut down, he did not complain about going from riding in a 200 mile bike race, to using a cane, a walker and then a wheelchair.
All of this in about a year and a half. His wheelchair changed from his ability to roll along with his own hands, to needing someone to push.
Of course that was 3 months before, he then needed to motorize it; but at least he could work to get out of it and walk around some & could still drive a specially built van he was able to purchase. Nice automated ramp made it easy to get in and out and his chair served as the driver's seat.
Sorry, that was 2 months ago; now it was using the chair, a hoist built into a hook added in the ceiling to get into his favorite chair or into bed, but he could still drive the van.
Dang it.. That was 2 months ago too... the chair was his only way out of the bed. The hoist was only for removing him from the bed to the chair (and without details... there was a second chair involved too). Van... drivers' seat re-installed; who's driving him around today?

Two years before he rode in a well known C&O Canal 200 mile Bike Ride and finished it, he was now fully mobilized only by an electric wheelchair and he couldn't even raise his hand high enough to scratch his head, only able to achieve by leaning his head into the hand; or walking his hand up his head with the other hand on the elbow to reach the top. Yet you heard no complaints, just jokes and laugher. He had earned his Masters in Theology, a Doctor of sorts ... beings his title was now Doctor. He had been a Reverend within the Assembly of God church for quite some time... it was his life. He touched so many.

Got to visit him in July 2014... Went with my siblings. We had a grand week... he lived in West Virginia; so we visited a few Civil War sites, including Gettysburg, it really was fun to be together. The last night we were there, we all went to Outback's and we had a great dinner together... though we didn't know then that it would be our last dinner with him. Hmmm.... last dinner... someone from theology... sounds familiar.

7 months later, we all returned to the same place, spending only about 4 days there. He wasn't there this time, only some pictures on a table, and a big poster board picture of him in his wheelchair, wearing the bandana he wore on his bike ride and a big thumbs up. All would be okay was the message heard that day during the service.

Official cause of death was respertory failure... doctors never really knew what it was though it was some form of Lou Gehrig disease, MS, or similar.

This was my oldest brother Ron (RGW1)... today would have been his 70th birthday. Happy Birthday Ron.

Randy, what a beautiful tribute to someone who was near and dear to you. This was so eloquently written your memory made your brother very visible to me. I hope others will take your lead if they also wish to share birthdays and memorialize, and not just necessarily in memorial. Hopefully you all will understand what I mean - I have a big lump in my throat right now over this - it is so touching.

As you may have noticed I have missed a couple birthdays - sorry I was in the hospital and didn't take my laptop with me this time. I knew I didn't feel good, but did feel different than I had before, so I just took my adult coloring books and attempted to do some therapy to stop the shaking in my hands. It did help somewhat, at least it was peaceful for me. I have congestive heart failure and my body decided it was going to keep all the fluids that I had been in taking - of course thereby putting increased pressure on my heart and lungs. Once we got rid of some of the excess then they found pneumonia in my lungs. But I am on the mend and thankful for wonderful nurses and a doctor whom I can really consider a friend. He is always there for me when I need him. After Randy's wonderful words I feel foolish over my trivial health problems. Just wanted you to know why I haven't been Johnny On The Spot.

On December 17, hellokitty from the US celebrated her birthday and on December 18 tsimkin also from the US with the following logic, "Think logically. Think mathematically. Think linguistically. Just make sure you think." celebrated his birthday. Neither birthday person logged on prior to or since their day of celebration so I shall simply post a nice card to express our Braingleland wishes from everyone and attempt to get back in gear and get one posted later today for a couple guys who are celebrating today, December 20. And in all the rush of trying to get everything done, in case I forget to do so "Merry Christmas to our Braingle family".

OK folks, third time is the charm, I hope. I am late, and the more I rush the hurrieder I get behind. Would help if my mind were a bit clearer and my fingers would work with my brain. Anyhow we have a couple of guys who did up their birthdays on December 20 and of course I wound up sleeping that one in. Sorry - time hopefully will cure this problem. So......

Enjoying Minecraft and programming are things lempamo from, I am guessing, Louisville, Kentucky likes to do. He has not logged into Braingle for a while, but will send out birthday wishes anyhow and hope he can find time to rejoin us after the Christmas vacation.

Also mnkgyl from India had a birthday on December 20. Have heard he wishes he could change his username as a lot of people misinterrupt that he is female because of the GYL on the end. And unfortunately most of us here in the States just naturally thing that stands for Monkeygirl. Not so, as his motto is "Live the day as if it is your last." And he plays a mean game of Werewolf on Braingle.

So anyhow guys, I hope you had happy birthdays with family, friends and other loved ones.

With Christmas bearing down on us and trying to keep shy of two little boys who could easily pass their colds back to Grayma, I have been sort of hibernating away from everyone, and my computer so again I apologize for missing some birthdays: Ladies first - on the 24th LittleOwl from the United Kingdom celebrated her birthday - she hasn't logged in for a while, so I hope she can soon rejoin us. On the 22nd of December CosminBotoc from Bucharest, Romania, celebrated his birthday. And then on Christmas Day, December 25th, Horsemn4 from the US celebrated his birthday. He says he is a Jack of all trades, and his interests are learning, teaching, puzzles, and trivia - and he has played every Braingle game.

So to these three Brainglers I do extend apologies and best wishes for their birthdays and the holiday season. I am hoping that each of you have been able to realize how special you are even as you are swallowed into the Christmas celebrations. I do have two grandsons, which I live with who are also celebrating one day before and two after Christmas. Tee Hee, the 11 year old, who went with his siblings Christmas afternoon to spend the rest of his break from school with his father - had a short impromptu, birthday cake, Happy Birthday to You song, with 11 candles stuck into a pecan pie. He loved it!

Hugs to all and remember - Here comes the New Year!

I concur with you Grayma...

My daughter in laws birthday is the 21st of December, and we have a niece with a December 24th birthday. So easy to "sort of" forget them. My wife was a bit concerned that she bought an extra gift for our DIL until I mentioned it was her birthday; and she quickly acknowledged that point. She pulled out some birthday wrapping paper and resolved that issue... but cripes, it must have been harder for her over the years dealing with people putting both celebrations in one. Sorry, really not fair. Don't spend more on one gift trying to combine Christmas and their birthday. Think of their birthday as in August... and go from there. Happy birthday to those with December birthdays... just a little special thought!

I still want everyone to feel free to send your own wishes to that special friend or couple if they have an anniversary that you know of. Also if I have missed you, please let me know so I can add you to my list and maybe get it right the next time. Some people have left our sides to partake in other venues, but like me many are coming back home to what feels like family. We do have a unique little group here that I truly enjoy. I also have one stray birthday that shows up on my December list for brandonfave . with no date of birthday and no flag. Well again I must apologize for missing several birthdays in January. On the 15th I was hospitalized for two weeks for congestive heart failure and pneumonia. I was very lucky to have great nurses and a wonderful caring doctor, loving family and caring friends. I am better now, but do have to watch my P's and Q's. Reminds me of the old saying, "Take care of your body because if you wear it out, where else are you going to live." Enough about me.

On January 15, HOOPYSCOOP celebrated her birthday. She enjoys reading and writing, and learning what makes things work. On January 17, Bender from Kalamazoo, MI, had his birthday. He is a manufacturer, loves Heavy Metal music and professional hockey. "IT'S TRUE...The early bird gets the worm, but the second rat gets the cheese", is the bi-line of my friend, Catmandon from Texas who had a birthday on January 19. He has been a member of Braingle since Oct 17, 2005, and is a great Werewolf Game player. Doctapeppaman from the US had his birthday on January 26th and TanCW from Singapore who enjoys reading and has "Are you a trivia buff? Join "1 vs. 100" to put your intellect to the test" as his bi-line was the birthday guy for January 27th.

Again I do apologize to the birthday folks. I do have a tablet which I had up at the hospital with me, but found out my pictures and some of the things I do with this, I could not do on the little tablet. So I will now start arranging the month of February and hope for the best. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL THE JANUARY CELEBRANTS. Am hoping you had lots of cake, and blessings with family, friends and other loved ones.

Goodness sakes February has not been a month for birthdays, or at least I haven't come upon that many. Here Valentine's Day has been here and gone and I still haven't had any birthday notifications. Please folks, if I have missed someone, please let me know. I know of one coming up toward the end of the month of one of our high scoring members, but other than that, I am still hunting. And here I was hoping for Leap Year we would have a February 29th baby. So for right now all I can say is HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL FEBRUARY CELEBRANTS. Hope you have a marvelous birthday with lots of family, friends, and other loved ones.

I wish I had a 29th of Feb birthday... I would be about 15 this year then! Sadly, 1955 was not a leap year.

Wouldn't that be the way to try and explain why I have a 36 & 33 year old children? and at least one grand child who is only 6 years younger than I am!!

It's just not fair I tell you... just not fair!

Like you, Randy, I was hoping someone would have a February 29th birthday so we could have a really big celebration. LOL I am trying to remember didn't Lil Abner and Daisy Mae have something in Dogpatch that had to do with Leap Year - like the girls got to choose their man? Been so long ago that I even thought about Dogpatch that I can't remember. Am sure there will be someone who can jar my memory. Your discussion of how you would explain your old children and young grandchild sort of reminds me of the old song about being my own grandpa!

Lil Abner was not one of the cartoons I followed growing up. About the only thing I recall about Lil Abner is that Sadie Hawkins Day came out of that strip and over time became an annual event. A day where girls can ask boys out.

But it was this event that created another event that said on leap years, specifically the 29th of Feb... gals can ask the guys to get married. This last part is not from my memory, I did a wikipedia search to confirm my thoughts about Sadie Hawkins day was as I remembered, at the bottom of this subject was this added note about Feb 29.

So all you unmarried ladies get ready, your chance to ask an unmarried gentleman for marriage is coming up (even though this has not been a barrier for years)!
