Singer George Michael died yesterday, December 25th. He started out in the group Wham! and became a successful solo artist, collaborating with people like Elton John and Aretha Franklin. George was 53 years old when he died apparently of cardiac arrest.

Sad that he died on Christmas, as one of the songs I've heard a lot lately on the radio is the song "Last Christmas". He was also on the original recording of "Do They Know It's Christmas?"

I am still in disbelief... Debbie Reynolds, mother of Carrie Fisher, died today after talking about her daughter who died yesterday and having a stroke. The details are not very complete yet... but what a chain of events.

A onetime Oscar nominee, Debbie appeared in more than 50 movies. She is best remembered for playing alongside Gene Kelly and Donald O'Conner in 1952's Singin' in the Rain. The joyful film is typically cited as the greatest movie musical of all-time. Other big-screen credits included The Unsinkable Molly Brown and How the West Was Won. She played the title role in the Albert Brooks comedy Mother and was unrecognizable as Liberace's mother in the acclaimed HBO biopic Behind the Candelabra. She once knocked Elvis Presley from the top of the charts, earned Tony and Emmy nods, won a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild, as well as an honorary Academy Award.

William Christopher Dies: Father Mulcahy Actor On 'M.A.S.H.' Was 84

Christopher died of small-cell carcinoma at his home in Pasadena, California. Married in 1957, he had two children. One of their son, Ned, had Autism, and Christopher devoted much of his spare time to the National Autistic Society, doing public service announcements to bring attention to autism. In 1985, he and his wife Barbara wrote Mixed Blessings, a book about their experiences raising Ned.

Christopher died exactly one year after the death of fellow M*A*S*H actor, Wayne Rogers.

I would like to wish everyone a Happy 2017.. we lost a lot of good people in 2016, hopefully we all take a moment to reflect on their lives and what it may have meant to you growing up. Their efforts are not lost, if we take time to remember them from time to time.

Mary Tyler Moore passed away today near her home in Greenwich, Connecticut at the age of 80. Cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest after being hospitalized with pneumonia. According to her death certificate, the cause of death was that she was having severe heath issues due to aspiration pneumonia, hypoxia and diabetes mellitus. After having trouble getting oxygen into her tissues, the actress went into cardiac arrest. Moore was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 29, 1936. In the 1950s, she began her career in live commercials as the Happy Hotpoint. A U-tube video of at least one of her commercials is available. Sorry to you younger folks... it's in black and white.

Her big break came when Carl Reiner and Danny Thomas cast Moore in her star-making role as Laura Petrie, the hip and fun wife of Dick Van Dyke's Rob Petrie on "The Dick Van Dyke" show, which ran on CBS from 1961 to 1966.  Who can forget the show where she got her toe stuck in the tub and the door was stuck. Rob had put on a permanent marker mustache which was so obvious. If you didn't watch this one and laugh, you do not have a sense of humor.

But Moore was best known for her title role on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," the first American sitcom about a single, working woman. Also a CBS mainstay, it ran from 1970 to 1977.  Who can turn the world on with a smile!?

She won seven Emmys over the course of her career, including five for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, a record she shared with Candace Bergen and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the most wins in that category.

Moore also found great success in fllms, starring in 1967's "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and opposite Elvis Presley in 1969's "Change of Habit" before the launch of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

Moore was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as a frosty suburban mom in the 1980 film "Ordinary People," a role that came shortly after her own son, Richie, accidentally shot himself at the age of 24.

Over the course of her career, she also won a Tony, three Golden Globes and a SAG lifetime achievement award, and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was the recipient of a Peabody.

She will be missed. I loved watching her in The Dick Van Dyke show which my Dad always enjoyed and we watched together as a family. She always seemed to have such upbeat and funny roles except for a few movies she did later in life wherein she did play a somewhat villainous character.

SMILE and people will wonder what you are up to!

Looks like a rough year for actors this year... or at least those I am familiar to.

Mike Connors, who starred as a hard-hitting private eye on the long-running television series "Mannix," has died. He was 91.

The actor died surrounded by family Thursday afternoon at a Los Angeles hospital from complications of leukemia that had been diagnosed a week earlier, said his son-in-law, Mike Condon.

"Mannix" ran for eight years on CBS beginning in 1967. Viewers were intrigued by the tall, smartly dressed, well-spoken detective who could mix it up with the burliest of thugs and leap on the hood of a racing car to prevent an escape. Episodes normally climaxed with a brawl that left the culprits bruised and beaten.

"Up until Mannix, most private investigators were hard-nosed, cynical guys who lived in a seedy area and had no emotions," Connors theorized in 1997. "Mannix got emotionally involved. He was not above being taken advantage of."

His movie and TV career stretched from the 1950s to 2007, when he had a guest role on "Two and a Half Men."

Connors made his film debut in 1952's "Sudden Fear," which starred Joan Crawford. Other films included "Island in the Sky," ''The Ten Commandments," and a remake of "Stagecoach."

Connors, born Krekor Ohanian in 1925, was from an Armenian community in Fresno. He served in the Air Force during World War II and played basketball at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Time Flies. I used to watch Mannix. I had forgotten all about that show until Randy said something. I enjoy that show, as all the detective(s) shows.

One of the top news stories today seems to be about the ship Destination with Capt. Jeff Hathaway, Larry O'Grady, Charles Glenn Jones, Raymond Vincler, Kai Hamik, and Darrik Seibold reported as lost at sea after a storm in the Bering Sea. They were not filmed as part of the Deadliest Catch show, but they were known by all the ships crews who took part in the series. It made the title of the show come to life. What a world these fishermen live in. I haven't watched the show in the past couple years for personal reasons, but I know when I was watching it I kept telling myself, this is not for me.

I worked in the construction industry for many years, and even in the Los Angeles area, going out in the cold and/or rain was never enjoyable. These guys do it for a living.

My heart goes out to them and to their families, though the search seems to be over... I guess there is a chance one or more could have survived if they got to shore somewhere. I doubt they could still be alive if they are still in the water, their body temps would be drastically reduced by now.

Actor Bill Paxton, well-known for memorable roles in films such as Aliens, Twister, Titanic, Apollo 13, and The Terminator, died Saturday at the age of 61 due to complications during surgery.

More recently a star on television, Paxton commanded the lead role in HBO's Big Love for five seasons, played John Garrett on the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and currently stars in the CBS's reboot of Training Day.

In a released statement, his family said: "A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department, and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker. Bill's passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable.

Originally born in Fort Worth, Texas, Paxton moved to Los Angeles at just 18 years old to pursue an acting career.

Joseph Wapner, a retired judge who presided over "The People's Court" for more than a decade, died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles, his grandson told the Washington Post. He was 97.

The grandson, Gabriel Wapner, could not confirm a cause of death, but he has suffered from a series of strokes in recent years. According to TMZ, Wapner exhibited breathing problems and was hospitalized last week before returning home on Friday for hospice care.

Wapner was the first judge to preside over "The People's Court" when it premiered in September 1981. Before his daytime TV debut, he served on the bench of the Los Angeles Superior Court judge for 20 years.

In a statement on Sunday, Warner Bros. Television, which distributes "The People's Court," said, "As TV's first judge, Judge Wapner blazed the trail for a genre of court shows still thriving and in the pop culture zeitgeist some three decades later. We mourn his Honor's passing and celebrate his full life."

The first iteration of "The People's Court" would go on to run for 12 seasons and inspired a slew of other court- and crime-based syndicated TV shows, including such long-running series as "Judge Judy." It's still on the air today, but with Marilyn Millian on the judge's bench.
"The People's Court" is currently in its 32nd overall season. It was canceled in 1993, but revived in 1997 with former lawyer and Mayor of New York Ed Koch as arbiter.

Wapner was a municipal judge for two years before serving at the L.A. Superior Court from 1961 to 1979. He also made his mark on pop culture, being lampooned in sketch shows including "Saturday Night Live." Dustin Hoffman's "three minutes to Wapner" expression in "Rain Man" was quickly adopted by "People's Court" fans.

Wapner was married to his wife, Mickey, for 70 years. He had three children.

Normally, I would reserve my posts to people of importance, whether only by me or by their importance in our world. Tonight I read about these two twins who died the same day over past the week-end. In less than a week from now, my mother in law Mary, whom I have called mom since 1979 will turn 97... and though she is not a twin of someone, she is a very active woman who I can only hope is my inspiration in my later years. I know to their families, these two are important. Sometimes, we are all a part of a family tie, even within the Braingle family.

BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP) — Ninety-seven-year-old twins Jean Young Haley and Martha Young Williams left the world as they entered it: together
.
The two women died over the weekend in freezing temperatures after both fell and became stranded outside Haley's home following an evening out. Police say they believe Williams fell as she walked to her car Friday evening, and Haley fell as she tried to get inside to call for help.

Williams' daughter, Susan, said Monday that she takes solace in knowing the twins entered and left life together, with one trying to save the other. She said it would have been incredibly hard for either sister to live without the other.

"It's powerful, it's astounding, it's stunning," she said. "And regardless of the pain we're all feeling, at least they're together."

A neighbor found the sisters Saturday morning. Overnight temperatures in the area had dropped to as low as 11 degrees, with wind chills as low as minus 8.

Though twins, the two women had quite different personalities, Susan Williams said. She described her mother as pure and innocent, while her aunt could be more mischievous and humorous. They were both fun-loving and enjoyed dining at local restaurants together, where everybody got to know them.

A pair of elderly twins die on the same day just 25 feet away from each other.

"The two of them together made a whole, complete person," she said. "They completed each other."

The night they fell, they had gone out for dinner.

The sisters often frequented Eats Restaurant in Seekonk, Massachusetts, owner George Mihailides recalled Monday. Mihailides said seeing the sisters always made him smile. He often asked them about the secret to a long life and he thinks their upbeat attitude was key.

"They were extraordinary," he said. "A real class act."

Martha Williams spent more than half of her life in Barrington and had been living for about seven years with her daughter in the Rumford village of East Providence. Haley lived on the waterfront in Barrington for more than 60 years — just a 20-minute drive away from her twin.

Susan Williams said she was inspired by her mother's way of treating everyone with polite grace and respect and was inspired by her aunt's zest for life.

"They knew who they were and they wanted to be who they were, and they absolutely did," she said.

Haley's family released a statement Monday saying the twins had a "great passion for life and were an inspiration to us all. They lived their 97 years to the fullest with charm, grace, kindness and style and will be remembered with fondness by the many people whose lives they touched."

Legendary comic Don Rickles, a rapid-fire insulting machine who for six decades earned quite a living making fun of people of all creeds and colors and everyone from poor slobs to Frank Sinatra, has died. He was 90.

Rickles died Thursday at his home in Los Angeles of kidney failure.

Sarcastically nicknamed "Mr. Warmth," Rickles had mock disdain for stars, major public figures and all those who paid to see him, tweaking TV audiences and Las Vegas showroom crowds with his acerbic brand of takedown comedy. A good guy and devoted husband away from the stage, Rickles the performer heartlessly laid into everyone he encountered — and they loved it.

Anyone who watched him knew his character was an act.
