PresidentialPapersMix-Up
It is a warm, late spring day in Cypher, South Decoder. The students of Tatanka High School are excitedly preparing for their year-end field trip to Mount Rushmore. Several classes are participating, including Mrs. Mountain's geography class, Mr. Black's history class, and Miss Hill's ecology class.
Students had been asked to prepare a presentation about one of the Presidents appearing on the famous monument. As they ran to the bus, several students dropped their notes. As they hurriedly gathered the papers, they didn't notice the papers had been mixed up. The jumbled information made for some interesting, if inaccurate, presentations about the presidents' parties, home states, and accomplishments.
Presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln
Political Parties: Federalist, National Union, Unaffiliated, Whig
Home States: Colorado, Delaware, Mississippi, Missouri
Accomplishments: created 5 national parks; established Yosemite Valley as a protected land; ratified a treaty protecting access to the Mississippi River; sponsored the Lewis & Clark expedition
Can you piece together the "facts" the students presented from Mr. Black's notes?
Note: Knowledge of US history is not needed to solve this logic-grid. In fact, such knowledge might make it more difficult!
1) Washington was the leader of the Federalist Party. Roosevelt wasn't Unaffiliated.
2) Between Roosevelt and Jefferson, one of them was from Colorado, the other established Yosemite Valley as a protected land.
3) Three of the presidents are: the member of the Whig Party, the one from Colorado, and the one who created 5 national parks.
4) The Whig President wasn't from Delaware. He also didn't establish Yosemite Valley as a protected land or ratify a treaty protecting access to the Mississippi River.
At this point, Mr. Black was laughing too hard to keep up with his note-taking, but he does remember the following information:
5) EITHER the Federalist created 5 national parks, OR he was from Delaware.
6) EITHER the Unaffiliated President was Roosevelt, OR he was from Colorado.
7) EITHER the President who sponsored the Lewis & Clark expedition was from Missouri, OR he was a member of the National Union Party.
Scroll down for the answer.
Let's start with the parties:
Washington was the leader of the Federalist Party. [1]
The Unaffiliated President wasn't Roosevelt, [1] so he was from Colorado. [6]
Jefferson, then, was from Colorado, and Roosevelt established Yosemite Valley as a protected land. [2]
Roosevelt wasn't a Whig, [4] so he was National Union, and Lincoln was the Whig.
Now let's look at accomplishments:
The three Presidents in the third clue are the Whig (Lincoln), the one from Colorado (Jefferson), and the one who created 5 national parks. That can't be Roosevelt, so Washington created 5 National Parks. [3]
Since it couldn't have been Lincoln, it was Jefferson who ratified a treaty protecting access to the Mississippi River. [4]
That leaves Lincoln as the sponsor of the Lewis & Clark expedition.
Finally, the states:
We have already established that Jefferson is from Colorado. Washington (Federalist) is not from Delaware [5], and neither is Lincoln (Whig) [4], so Roosevelt is from Delaware.
Lincoln, who sponsored the Lewis & Clark expedition, is a Whig, so he is from Missouri. [7]
That leaves Washington as the one from Mississippi.
Here, then, is the mixed-up version of history presented by the students of Tatanka High School:
George Washington, of the Federalist Party, came from Mississippi, and created 5 National Parks.
Thomas Jefferson, who was Unaffiliated, came from Colorado, and ratified a treaty protecting access to the Mississippi River.
Theodore Roosevelt, of the National Union Party, came from Delaware, and established Yosemite Valley as a protected land.
Abraham Lincoln, of the Whig Party, came from Missouri, and sponsored the Lewis & Clark expedition.
Happily, Mr. Black was very understanding about the mix-up. He allowed the students to sort out their papers, and based their grades on those.
Perhaps this was a factor in Mr. Black being voted as Teacher of the Year!
To set the record straight:
George Washington, believing partisanship would cripple government, was Unaffiliated for all 8 years of his presidency, came from Virginia, and ratified the Jay treaty, which protected access to the Mississippi River (among many other things!)
Thomas Jefferson was a founder of the Democratic-Republican Party (a forerunner of the modern Democratic Party), was also from Virginia, and sponsored the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1803.
Theodore Roosevelt was a Republican, from New York, who created 5 National Parks. (They are Crater Lake in Oregon, Wind Cave in South Dakota, Sullys Hill in North Dakota, Platt in Oklahoma, and Mesa Verde in Colorado.)
Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, also known as National Union during the Civil War, from Illinois, and established Yosemite Valley as a protected land.
