Brain Teasers
Witch and Delia
The witch spent many days and nights preparing a mixture for the mayor's wife, Delia. She knew that the Seekers of Knowledge were not the ones who desired the recipe. The witch was annoyed and thought of Delia as a coward. To send someone out, whom she knew would be worthy enough to open the bottle, is petty, and insulting. The anger stirred within the witch as she walked into Raptin. She was tricked, and the trickster would pay for her deceit.
The witch approached the town, and the air chilled around her. It was quiet and dark, the way she loved it. She saw the mayor's house, and slowly walked up the steps and lightly knocked on the door. The door barely opened as Delia answered the door, "Yes, is there a problem?" Delia turned as pale as a ghost seeing the old witch. "Yes, there is a problem, and its name is Delia," the witch said in a very cold, calm, and steely voice. "I am here to collect payment for the recipe that you tricked out of me." Delia stood there and said nothing.
The witch waited patiently and finally opened the beaker, slowly pouring the liquid on the ground. "Read what it says, and if you answer correctly, I will let you keep what is yours; if you don't, I will take what is mine," the witch said.
The magical liquid formed words on the ground, and read:
I come within the night.
A mask of calmness covers my voice.
Within my heart, anger stirs.
I bring vengeance, and death.
My judgment has been made.
Who am I?

Answer
WitchThe first sentence in the riddle is referring to the witch, who did come in the night because it was dark. The second part of the riddle is the first time the witch spoke to Delia; her voice was cold and steely, but still calm. The fact that Delia tricked her caused anger within her heart while she waited to get back what belonged to her. The witch brought a way to right the wrong with death; she had already decided what she was going to do with Delia even before arriving there.
Delia looked at the words and read them slowly. The words would disappear once she read them. She had a look of fright upon her face, as she realized whom it was speaking of. Delia stuttered as she answered the riddle, "It's you, isn't it?" Delia looked at the witch, "I'll give you your recipe back," she said with tears. "Yes, it is I, and I bring with me death. The recipe can go to your children." The witch reached out, hands glowed a deathly black, and touched Delia. Delia screamed, but only for a moment, then her body withered up as the life was drained out of her. The witch laughed, as the bones of Delia turned to dust and fell to the ground. A slight breeze blew, and the dust began to scatter. The witch turned and went back to her home.
