Answer
paperLines 1-2: The invention of paper is traditionally attributed to Cai Lun, a Chinese court official, dated to 105 A.D. He used various materials to make it, including fishing nets, which are "devices thrown into seas".
Lines 3-4: Ruled paper is paper that has lines on it. Before the age of laptops and smartphones, ruled paper was about the only thing used to make notes in school (i.e. ruled paper ruled!).
Lines 5-6: Technological advances such as laptops and smartphones are threatening to make paper obsolete, as most things can now be done electronically.
