Answer
The Great Lakes: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, OntarioThere are five, lakes being blue (as in true blue). Lake Michigan belongs to the United States, the other lakes are shared by the United States and Canada. The lakes are part of a chain, with locks between some of them. Many shipwrecks occur by grounding on rocks in shallow water. The initials spell "homes", which are found in neighborhoods.

Excellent one.
Though I am not from an American country and do not know much about it, I must confess that even I had, I wouldn't have solved it.
Well done.

I liked this too, but I thought the line about the locks was a giveaway. And I wasn't sure about the line about most meeting their fate on the rocks -- does that refer to Niagara Falls?
I grew up in upstate New York, so I definitely had an edge here.
You know, I haven't actually CHECKED the answer -- it would be kind of embarrassing if I were wrong about it being the Dionne Quintuplets...
Can anyone identify the following:
Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams,
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.
And further below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of november remembered.

Anyway, this was a really good teaser. I found it easy, but of course I had a bit of an edge. I live right on Lake Ontario and I was taught the "HOMES" acronym in public school.
Still, the way it was written was very clever and well thought out. Nice job!

I guessed fingers! That was the first thing that popped into my head. It was very difficult. Great- but difficult.
I thought this one was easy--but I am from Michigan so the Great Lakes are a part of my life!
Well-Written teaser! Those who didn't know the answer learned something new today ... a good thing ANY day!
Too tough to solve for a person not from USA/Canada! I am stumped. An excellently worded and carefully thought out teaser. Keep it up!

I loved it! I didn't get the answer but some of that could be that I am functioning on only 4 hours of sleep. College life is hard! I was really impressed at how well written this teaser was and...as one of the other brainsters said...I did learn something. I know all the great lakes but I guess it never dawned on me that we share them with Canada. Really impressive riddle. Thank you.
it's clever but irrelevent to those who aren't american/canadian!

Congrats on making teaser of the day!
Being from Ohio and now living in Wisconsin I was able to get it right away but it was really fun and well thought out!! I will be sending this one to a few of my friends!!
I couldn't figure out the HOMES thing, but figure this out all the same. Guess my initial educators were a bit lacking the the acronym sector...or I slept through more of gradeschool than I realize.
Killer riddle.
Killer riddle.
I should have gotten it, but didn't. I got as far as water-related! I know HOMES but I didn't think of it. Yes, THEIR rocks would have been fairer since grammatically it was implied that the siblings crashed on the rocks. I didn't know that there were locks on the lakes, as I'm 'just a Long Islander' (for those of you who know where I'm talking about!) And now I'll remember which sole lake is within U.S. borders!
Excellent job! Thank you!
And thanks for the reference to Gordon Lightfoot--loved his sound. (loved Sundown even better than Wreck)

OOPS!
I grew up near the Great Lakes! Nice teaser!
I got this right off, probably because the only canals with locks that came to mind were Panama and the Great Lakes! Thanks for the well written teaser.

I don't get the 'true blue' thing
Hard ,but very interrrresting
haha nice
I live in Michigan...I did'nt get it,absolutely noooo excuse for me.Great(no pun intended)one
Thats definitely going on my fsvorites!
Tough - even though I live by Lake Superior. The four belong to two threw me, but the locks and homes saved me. Thank you!
I should have got that one! I'm a Michigander! I feel so stupid
WOW! That was awesome. Maybe I just think so because I struggled through it and got the right answer, but I don't believe I'm really that biased. I agree that "their" would have made that line clearer, because I was thinking that the siblings were crashing on rocks.. but disregarding that, and realizing that neither the five oceans nor the five continents that are represented by the Oylmpic ring logo worked to spell out anything neighbourly, I thought just a little harder... rivers? hmm noo there's too many of them, and I don't know how they're linked... ohh but I do know of five lakes that are nearby.... and lo and behold, that was it!
Anyways, I think that if the states that border the lakes would like to join Canada, we should be able to negotiate some kind of awesome deal that helps preserve this wonderful stock of fresh water, and say, not have to ship it down to California or anything silly like that. Yeah.

What's true blue? Great teaser!
Connected by locks gave it away.
For me, I didn't get it until the arranged initials forming things in the neighborhood--and then went back and appreciated the opening lines more!! I don't usually get riddles (I hope that's what it was!), so answering this was exciting for me.
I got it!
I just knew living in WI would pay of one day!
Excellent teaser!

Well written, fun, and dang it, I didn't get it!
Nicely written.
I grew up on Lake Michigan's shore, so I got it right away. In those days we could actually go to the beach all day and the water was clear and the sand was fairly clean! (Oh, oh--I'm giving my age away!)
jcann- and HOW old are you?
(Also, 101st comment!)
(Also, 101st comment!)
I guess I am in the minority here. I did not like it at all. When it said many meet their fate upn the rocks, like another reader, I thought it still referred to the siblings. I knew it had something to do with water, but just did not care for it. Good you all liked it.
It was okay. Three of the lakes are wihin an hour or less drive so i have been to each of those on a fairly regular basis (despite my dislike of summer, sun and water). Michigan and Superior are much further away but I have also been to both of those.
I am not sure how many "meet their fate" on the rocks - the only shipwreck I am familiar with is the Edmund Fitzgerald and that happened in the open water, not at shore.

An oldie but goodie. Going away tomorrow on a much needed vacation. See you in 2 weeks.
I got the correct answer and I liked this puzzle. Being from Michigan made it easy for me. But the line that told me the answer is about the initials of the lakes spelling "homes" - we all knew that at a young age. Thanks for posting! CB, Enjoy your vacation!
The last two lines helped. Everyone knows "HOMES".
I enjoyed the quiz. Like many others, it took the last two lines for the answer to come to me, then reading back through the whole thing, I was certain! Good going!
Fun puzzle. I LOVE the Great Lakes, being from Michigan and surrounded by 3 of them. Thanks for posting.
I had no idea. This was hard for me.
I thought it was the Olympic rings... I had no clue whatsoever.
I'm with Imurray on this one!
