Brain Teasers
Harmless?
Marvin and Loren are exploring a forest in Queensland. They spotted a nice rainbow earlier, and then decided to go see the wildlife near the river. Loren spots a weird but harmless looking mammal and goes for a closer look. Marvin yells to be careful because it is venomous. Loren laughs, thinking Marvin must be joking. Unfortunately Loren gets too close and is stung in the hand. Loren starts to cry out in pain. Marvin comes over to Loren to tell him how stupid he is, but at least the venom is not lethal. What did Loren get stung by?
Hint
It's not related to a duck but...Answer

I never knew that about the platypus.
I'm confused....is the venom lethal or not?
As soon as I saw the hint...that gave it away.
I've a friend in Australia so this one was easy for me, but still an excellent teaser!
Good teaser. They are the strangest looking animal with a duck bill and a beaver tail! Don't think I would want one as a pet!
Nice one!I did not know that Duckbill Platapus was poisonous.
Hi:
I did not get the answer. After this comment I am going to look for the meaning of the mammal in my dictionary. So I can find out what the talk is about. Nice, isn`t It? quack - quack

I guessed it right away. The Platypus has poisenous barbs behind it's back? legs. Good one though I like a platypus!!!
This was a good teaser, although I read about the platypus in a book, so it was kinda easy. Great Job though!
I never would have known! Good one!
Good teaser and good job!
It was easy because its the only poisonous mammal in Australia but it is not the only poisonous mammal. look up the short tailed shrew right here in North America
Wow I did not know that ! Good one !

That was the first teaser I got.
I still needed the hint though.

I saw this on Animal Planet and was totally amazed!! That's why this came really easy for me. Great teaser and into my faves!!
Krabcat - yeah, the platypus and the echidna are the last of a kind of egg-laying mammal :-\
They didn't believe that the platypus was a real animal when it was first discovered, it was believed to be a hoax hehe.
I learned about them a long time ago now, when we were studying indigenous creatures in school once, but I learnt about the spurs in a documentary.
I live in Australia myself, and have only ever seen them twice off of television - so that kind of figures

Oh, hang on - darn it, I need to look at the dates on comments
Good one, easy for an Aussie
I got that straight away, being an Aussie myself.
The thing that isn't right about this teaser is that fact that no-one could possibly get anywhere near a platypus.
As soon as they hear you they hide. The only way to get near one is to be completely silent, or look at one in a zoo.
But nevertheless, it was a good teaser!

I used to be obsessed with these critters, so I did know it, but it was a clever brain teaser =)
That was easy, though i suppose it could be difficult if one didnt reside in Australia. It was blatantly obvious that it was a platypus. By the way, the babies are called puggles, and are very cute. actually, both echidna (a spiny anteater) and platypus young, are known as puggles. what a cute name..... the young are cute, but are hard to breed in captivity, or so i am lead to believe... oh, and also, the correct name is platypus, not duck-billed platypus, what an insult to australian culture, and the platypus itself. It has nothing at all to do with ducks. duh. they are completely different class... (in classification, i mean)
The hint totally gave it away. As for the previous comment, I've always heard they were called duck-billed platypus, not because it's related to a duck, but because it's bill is like a duck.
Knew this one from my many hours of reading.
cool! i never knew that about a platapus!
a venumous puss.lol lol lol
Having lived all my life in the United States (with an occasional day trip to Canada) I had no clue. This trivia teaser was very educational for me. Not every day I can say "I learned something new today." Thanks.
Learned something! Thanks!
cool...i didnt realize they were poisonous...i thought it was a porcupine or something like that
I never knew they were poisonous!
Great teaser!

This is a good teaser. I would like to see more like this. Its very informative.
i thot it was a bee... good teaser! i have NO wonderings on how THIS teaser made it to teaser of the day!
I was trying to picture a kind of mammal with a bee stinger sticking out its rear! LOL! Didn't know that about the platypus! are the spores like porcupine quills?
Goood one, I learned a new fact!
GOOD ONE, THEY SAY YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY, WELL THAT'S ONE FOR TODAY!
I got that they were in Australia.
Then looked at the hint & got it.
Did not know they could sting, that's why I needed the hint
I learned something new too.

I think a lot of us learned a new fact today, and I for one, am always happy to learn something new. This was very interesting, and the comments added even more to my store of trivial knowledge. Thank you and give us some more.
There is a difference between venomous and poisonous. Snakes and bees, spiders, and jellyfish are all venomous. Poisonous is like mushrooms , arsenic, cyanide and other drugs or plant stuffs.
I didn't know the answer because I didn't know the platypus lived in Australia. Go figure. Thanks for the teaser, it was very good.
Monday~

I learned something new today! (as always!!)
I didn't know that they were harmless either!!
I LOVE platypuses/platypi (not sure of the proper pluralization there lol)!!! They look so funny when they try to run!
I think platypi are marsupials, not mammals. Look it up. I think they lay eggs too, but don't quote me on that one. God smoked a little to much the day he invented them.
Marsupials are a variation (is that the right word? I'm not sure) of mammal. Nice riddle
Got it with the hint.
Love all the comments!! It's one of the best parts of the site. Also learn some things Good job
good one - i never knew about the duck-filled platypus - i learn something new every day

Being a loyal Australian, that was a synch.
You have to know something about animals in other parts of the world to get this one. I don't so did not get it. I guess all those living there and working this one out were very pleased. Good for them!
Good teaser - lots of interesting facts - thanks for posting!
. I have a few friends from Australia who I am sure would have gotten this easily but I needed the hint to do so.
For anyone not living "down under" or having had seen one in captivity this was a difficult teaser.

This was easy for me, I remember learning that in school (and thinking, "What a freakish animal...").
They can be lethal! Sometimes... Good teaser :-) Queensland is a giveaway for any person who knows a bit of Australian geography, though.
There is another interesting answer to this: In Queensland, Australia there is also a highly venomous plant called The Stinging Tree or Gympie Gympie and the only mammal to feed on this tree is a cute little marsupial called The Red Legged Pademelon. They may have walked over to get a closer look at the mammal and been stung by the tree. Search it on: questionableevolution.com
Three years later, and not knowing I had done it before, with the hint, I got it this time. The hint definitely gave it away, but isn't that what hints are for?
nice job...fun...informative
Amazing! I just read today's brain teaser of the day and the answer was
...... platypus!!
