Brain Teasers
Engulfed Tire
Trick
Trick brain teasers appear difficult at first, but they have a trick that makes them really easy.Trick
There is a tire lying on a completely level ground. The tire is not attached to a wheel. It is raining at two inches per minute. If it will take three days of rain to make the water level with the tire, how long will it take for the water to engulf the tire, assuming the tire is five inches tall?
Answer
It would never happen. The tire is made from vulcanized rubber, which floats. It could rain for years and the tire would still be floating.Hide Answer Show Answer

good tricky teaser, nicely written

Good teaser, but I got it!
This was a good one. I never thought about that because I thought that I was looking in the Math section... But good one!
Ah, ya got me on this one!
OH, YEAH! rubber! ^__^
very easy. was still fun though.
AAH I feel stupid.....I thought it was 3 days and I was like "this is too easy! The answers right there in the problem!" well I guess not.......Anyways I liked this teaser a lot and I hope to see more!
I read another teaser like this someplace else - about a ship's ladder instead of a tire...
simply glue it to the ground
well done, nicely written....but too easy......
Very easy, though I can see a careless person getting it wrong.
Also, on a completely flat ground, all the water would just flow away, because there is nothing to keep it in the area!
yeah, but the water reached the level of the ground so it wouldn't have anywhere to flow away to.
keheheh Good one!
Great job again a winnner!!
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that tires float.
roll: That was stupid cuz it was so obvious! :
Hey tin man my son and I really enjoyed this one
this is a good one
What if the tire was really heavy?
Even then the material it was made out of would still make it float. Even though a ship is really heavy it still floats.
i'm slightly confused . is it just the wording ?
what i gather from your answer is that even if you put a tire with no wheel (rim) attachement at the bottom of the lake it would float to the top ?
i don't think so . would it ?

It definately would. The rubber material that it is made out of floats. Only if something is holding it down will it not float.

But if you fill a ship with water it Will sink.
the 'trick' category gives it away
But thim, if the ship had jets underneath it and they propelled it upwards, it wouldn't sink. (You've won, but I still want to argue. )

ya but if the tire filled with water ( like the hollow part) it would sink...ive done it before....
i guessed '0' because its in trick but i had no idea why! good teaser
VERY GOOD, *BUT*, IF THE TIRE WAS INSIDE, THE WALL WOULD HOLD IT DOWN, ENUFF FOR WATER TO BECOME JUST A LITTLE HIGHER THAn it
Nicely written, but quite easy
The rain would never pill up if it was on completly leave ground. It wold be in a lower point.
i agree with reptile. it would hit the roof and the water will level.
I thought it was three days. I didn't know tires float.
It wuz ez, but I luv thez types of teasers
Very interesting. You never said it was a vulcanized rubber tire.
Would like ou to explain all the tires Ive seen at the bottom of lakes and rivers if they float so well.
And obviously if it were steal belted it would sink.

I thought that since it was on completly level land, the rain would never be able to cover the tire because how often has your backyard beed able to get 5 inches high?
