Wet Desert?
Riddle
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.Riddle
Although much water you see,
by definition, "desert" fits me.
In the winter I double in size,
but staying away is a word for the wise.
I am very windy, that is a clue,
What am I? Good luck to you.

Answer
Antarctica.Antarctica is full of snow and ice - forms of water.
It receives less than 10 inches of precipitation a year, which makes it a desert.
In the winter, water freezes around it, doubling its size.
The extremely cold temperatures are deadly for humans.

I wasn't even close.

It was said before but it really applies, this was a cool teaser.
I enjoyed it really, when I saw the answer. Good one.
That was good, is there any reason why it couldn't also be the arctic or north pole kinda thing? I got it, but thinking north, close anyway. Thanks!
My brain is not working right this early morn. I did not get the answer at all.
I got the answer! I thought it was easy, but I teach the continents yearly, so I guess it's just familiar to me...I thought a desert was a land with less than 1 inch of rainfall a year? Now I'll have to go look it up...hmmmmm
Im a nature boy - so this one was pretty easy and obvious.
Well now, wasn't that a bit of interesting trivia for the morning! You learn something new everday!
What else, on Earth, could it be? You don't say it has to be on our planet!
For Shawneeo (and others wondering about the north)
I could be wrong, but I think it's gotta be Antarctica because Antarctica is LAND (covered by snow & ice, of course). The North Pole is in an ocean, the Arctic Ocean, which is also frozen, and probably changes sizes with the seasons, but maybe it can't be a desert because it is technically an ocean. I'm not sure, though ... SWAFF???

pretty good.
You got me!
interesting
I had no idea, course i need my daughter to read the teasers to me!
I am not sure "I'm very windy, that is a clue" is really pertinent -- IS Antarctica particularly windy, as opposed to being simply cold? (Okay, I guess it's pretty windy, come to think of it.) Of course, once you have a wet desert that doubles in size in the winter, Antartica becomes the obvious solution... but I wondered if maybe it was a particular area in the Arctic or Antarctic region to which "windy" would specifically apply. I'm just over-thinking -- good riddle.
Here's mine:
I'm not made of cheese
I don't swim under seas
Am not loved by the bees
Nor plagued by the fleas
And if you see me on skis
It's some kind of tease
So who am I, please?
ANSWER: A potato. (But not a sea potato, obviously!)
ACCEPTABLE ALTERNATE ANSWER: Supreme Court Justice Anton Scalia
If you answered "fondue" -- good guess, but take another look at that first line! And I'm afraid I can't accept "great white shark," because technically it DOES swim under seas. The jury is still out on a couple of other answers which have been proposed, including "honey" and "London on the eve of the Great Fire of 1666." (I'm not sure, but I think maybe honey is officially considered a type of cheese, and who are we to say whether London on the eve of the Great Fire of 1666 was or was not loved by the bees?)
Here's something you might not know about the sea potato: it's the only animal (and yes, the sea potato IS an animal) which loses its brain when it grows up. Young sea potatoes have brains and move around in the sea, but when they reach maturity they put down a root, just like a plant (still underwater, of course) and their brain is absorbed into their roundish, featureless, potato-like body. Of course, many people exhibit a similar tendency. Ha ha ha. (Somehow that line seemed a lot funnier to me 20 years ago.)

Had no clue whatsoever to find the answer. Liked this teaser.
Hey, Swaff, anothr great one from you. Thanks much. Of course, I had to fudge and look, but I just wanted to say, no pun intended, THIS WAS COOL.
Very clever I got it, but you really have to think outside the box
Might not have gotten this if I hadn't seen "March of the Penguins" this year. Very nice.
Cute, but very easy. The kids might enjoy this one, I know I did.
EZ EZ EZ EZ EZ
I get it! (:
That was awesome!
That was awesome!
Good teaser, informative and interesting. Thanks for posting.
I liked it I proved to my mom that antarctica is a desert. The teaser was easy to me I remember that once in social studies we had like a half-hour discussion.
EZ!
Wet desert must be ice. A glacier is like that, but if it doubles in size every year it's not a glacier. Is Antarctica including surrounding ice really twice as large at its maximum as at its minimum?
BTW, the original meaning of "desert" is unoccupied, not dry. The verb "desert" is related: When you desert something you are no longer occupying it. The word "dessert" is also related. It meant something served after the table is cleared (deserted).
The modern definition of desert is a place with less than 10 inches (25 cm) of rain per year. The most populous city in Africa (Cairo) is in a desert, which is quite distant from the original meaning of the word.

Neat teaser,but easy.

Where is everyone today? It's late for me to be first!
I had the answer right away from the first two couplets; the third didn't help, but I didn't let it push me off my answer either!

I would never have gotten that one. Oasis is the only thing I could think of. It is deadly because you can never reach it and it get bigger the longer you look at it trying to get there. Oh well. it was just a guess.
My son in middle school was asked, "What's the world's largest desert?" He answered, "Antarctica". The teacher said he was wrong. We had to educate her . . .
Got this one before I got to the 2nd line. Too easy, but I liked it.
Wonderful riddle, nicely written, with a bit of science/trivia to sweeten the deal.
It's not too easy. I came up with the polar ice cap as my answer. Close, but no cigar. I don't know what rainfall is up there. It may not be a desert.

Hard one for me. I guessed oasis. I would never have thought the answer was a continent. Science is one of my worst subjects. May have helped if a hint was given.
