Even though I have the same name, I can be many things such as music, mathematics or cloth.
I can even be an object thrown by a referee to indicate a penalty.
I can be an extension of the wrapper shaped to finish the head of the cigar.
In England, I'm more refined, because I can be a five-pound note.

Answer
I'm a flag.In musical notation, a note value indicates the relative duration of a note, using the color or shape of the note head, the presence or absence of a stem, and the presence or absence of flags.
In mathematics, particularly in linear algebra, a flag is an increasing sequence of subspaces of a vector space V.
The most common definition of flag is the emblem that usually consists of a rectangular piece of cloth of distinctive design.
It can also be an object thrown by the referee to indicate a penalty such as a bright yellow flag.
On the cigar, the flag is an extension of the wrapper shaped to finish the head of the cigar. Sometimes it is tied off in a pigtail, and the flag is used instead of a cap.
The five pound note in England is also known as a 'flag'. The word flag has been used since the 1500's as a slang expression for various types of money.

Ditto Scallio! This one left me with a weird feeling... I got it, but didn't feel like I deserved it. I rationalized more clues than I "knew", if that makes sense. Fantastic teaser Jazz, and thanks for the fun facts. Keep them coming!
