The Academy Award of Merit - the "Oscar"The Academy Award of Merit, which we know as "the Oscar" was "born" in 1928. Weighing 8.5 pounds and standing 13.5 inches tall, the statuette was designed by MGM's chief art director Cedric Gibbons.
A popular but unsubstantiated story has been that "Oscar" got his name when academy librarian and executive director Margaret Herrick said that the statuette resembled her Uncle Oscar.
In support of the World War II effort between 1942 and 1944, Oscars were made of plaster, to be traded in for golden statuettes after the war.
The base of the Oscar was raised and changed from marble to metal in 1945.

i didn't know the wwii effort was that demanding, weren't the rations enough?
I'm not sure, but one thing to consider, it would have made Hollywood look really bad if they were giving out gold when everyone else was asked to make sacrifices. Maybe that was one reason they did this.
Only the title helped, and I guessed. Hm.
