Mysteries, Math and Breakfast
Riddle
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.Riddle
You might, perhaps at breakfast,
See a sticky part of me,
But I model, too--mathematics,
And I'm true north, strong and free.
Mrs. Christie's character
could help you, though not well,
For though she is quite close to me,
She simply cannot spell.
What am I?
See a sticky part of me,
But I model, too--mathematics,
And I'm true north, strong and free.
Mrs. Christie's character
could help you, though not well,
For though she is quite close to me,
She simply cannot spell.
What am I?
Hint
If it seems a bit confusing, what, with math and food and "free,"
There's one thing I ought to tell you:
I also am a tree.
Answer
Maple.Maple syrup, which is made from boiling the sap of maple trees, is a sticky breakfast topping.
Maple is also the name of mathematics modelling software.
The maple leaf is a symbol of Canada. The line "True north strong and free" is from "O Canada," Canada's national anthem.
The name of Agatha Christie's well known character, Mrs. Marple, is very close to the word "maple"... with a small spelling error!

I would say the math modeling software reference is obscure. Also, reference to a Agatha Christie character, not even spelled correctly, how is that a clue?
Yeah I agree very odd, but unique. Keep them coming. So yeah you can check out my quiz Nintendo Ds. But good job on getting a teaser acceppted. I can't get one.
ALL RIFHT I GOT IT RIGHT!!! pretty sweet dude
Ach, I finally got it right.
Fun!
I wasn't familiar with Maple as software, but figured it out via the syrup and Agatha Christie clues!

Breakfast and tree gave it away for me. I had no idea about the math or the character, though.
I Got It Right!!!!
I'm so proud of myself.
It took me like 2 minutes
until i looked at the hint and then

Enjoyed this one. I thought it was wrote well, and fun. Hope to see more of them
This one was cool! Great job, I enjoyed it.
Miss Marple was pushing it a bit...
Otherwise not bad!

piling on...the software and Mrs. Marple were a bit abstract, but it was fairly easy to solve based on the other clues.
i didnt think that all these americans would get "the true north strong and free" part. it helps to be from Canada!!
Since my grandson calls it------ syrup anyhow, it slipped right into my vocabulary. Sweet.
Maple Syrup? That may be alright for all of the North American users, but it leaves the rest of the world out in the cold.
I kept trying to work "magnet" in the answer, which clearly didn't work.
A littlr sticky but sweet enough to easily solve.
Man, I was way off. I was heading down the crossword puzzle lane of the newspaper.
Nice! Good old Maple... you've given me many sleepless nights... the mathematics reference and Agatha Christie reference might have been slightly obscure, but I'm familiar with both and so appreciate it.
It took a minute to remember the Marple part and I still don't get the mathematics clue but I answered it.
I like this one. I was way off base with every clue, so I didn't get it, but once I read the answer it was like "of course". Really good riddle.
that was a tough but good one
Cleverly written 2nd day in a row that the clue gave me the answer Though I prefer to think I'm getting smarter with riddles
It was great how you explained all the pieces of the clues to get the answer. I got as far as sap or syrup but couldn't relate either to Hercule Poirot I, like others, didn't know the math reference, but to think Christie's Mrs. Marple is obscure--shame on you!! That was an excellent clue, if I hadn't been stuck on Poirot!!
Although riddles are not my favorite part of the site, I thought this one was very well put together Kudos!

Being a Canadian I got that it
was Maple or a Maple Tree.
But not from all the clues.
Hi Bob45424 - A lot of these puzzles are on U.S. states, & other
American themes & movies & such.
Why not a Canadian puzzle in the
mix

Pretty easy, but still good. I got it with the hint, but I understood it without the hint.
I knew it had to be Mrs. Marple, but, I kept trying to CHANGE the letters, not drop one. I kept trying to get marble, or marvel, and just gave up too soon. I didn't know about the math software, so that wasn't any help to me.
It was a good riddle, though.
It was a good riddle, though.
Actually, your clues fit nearlyas well for Canadian Bacon. (Francis) Bacon was a great mathematician, "True North, Strong and Free" is obviously Canadian - even to us Ohioans, and "Marple" is only one letter off from "marble" which describes the way bacon is streaked with fat - to the horror of nutritionists and cardiologists and thedelight of diners! - Are you SURE you weren't talking about Canadian (Yum!) bacon??? :?
Stretched some of the clues (moaning because I didn't get it!), but not bad.
That was a great one. It took me a few minutes but I got it. Thanks so much for the great teaser.

WELL...I DIDN'T GET IT BUT THAT'S NO BIG SURPRISE TO ME. IT WAS STILL A GOOD RIDDLE. I REALLY ENJOYED IT AFTER SEEING WHAT THE ANSWER WAS!
i had no clue as to what the answer would be until i read the hint... that was the best clue of all, since i was not familiar with the others (other than maple syrup, which i didnt figure out)... great teaser
Seriously?!? Marple? And the rest of these are either obscure (who has ever heard of the math software?) or Canadian (who the heck knows the words to O Canada?). Overall, a very disappointing and obscure riddle.
The math part threw me off. I was thinking PI (pie) and I did think of Miss Marple, so came up with maple pie, LOL. Good riddle!
This is one of the best one's I've read- it was really hard. The hint gave it away. I finally understood the whole thing once I read the answer- thanks for a clear explanation.
All in all, GREAT JOB!
All in all, GREAT JOB!
I got it, but both the Math Software clue and the Canadian anthem clue were very obscure.
Got it, based on the Agatha Christie reference. Nice!
Fun, easy and entertaining teaser; the hint gave it away.
As us ausies know little about Canada, the closest I could get to, was a 'Bee'; it does fit, except for Mrs Christie?
In Aus we have honey for breakfast.
Bees use both mathematics & trigonometry in their hives, and compass directions in their dances, to share pollen sources with the swarm.
They are also involved in spelling?
