Brain Teasers
One Cent
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
A man was walking down the street one day when he found a penny from 1937. He got really excited because he could see Abraham Lincoln sitting in the Lincoln Memorial. The man showed a stranger and explained what he could see on the penny and the stranger ran away yelling, "You should be institutionalized!"
Why was the stranger yelling that?

Why does that mean he should be institutionalised. Obviously the penny must have said 1937 on it, and it must have had Lincoln on it because both these features are describe in the story part. I understand that the Lincoln coin did not appear until 1959 (being British I will take your word ) so obviously the one he had was a fake. I still don't understand the other mans reaction!
It's because he was seeing things that weren't there
I think the guy who ran away yelling "You should be institutionalized!" should be the one in the mental ward as his reaction was much more crazy than the man who was excited about finding a counterfiet coin.
it wasn't a counterfeit coin
this is in the wrong category - should be in 'trick'
???????????
shouldn't this be in trivia?
The man showed the coin to the stranger. Presumably the stranger could also see what the man was describing? According to the author of the teaser, the coin wasn't counterfeit? This whole scenario makes no sense.
I got it! But only because i collect wheat pennies. I have 13.
What are you guys talking about counterfeit? Lincoln was on the 30's pennies, but on the front and not sitting in the memorial on the back. The stranger thought he was crazy because the man was saying Lincoln was on the back, and not the front.
Does that make any sense?

What was wrong with the guy? Was he seeing the future?
Maybe it said 1987, and the guy read the date wrong. Aggghhh!! Get him a straight jacket!!!!!
That explains why my 1941 penny has a one cent on the back! I always wondered....
A wheat penny? I used to have one of those, but I lost it.
This is the Situation Category, not Trivia!
It's rather confusing (I don't live in America so I wouldn't know about the coins anyway). Perhaps the coin is from a parallel universe where this design appeared in 1937. As long as the man doesn't step on a butterfly or meet Edith Keeler like in Star Trek, he can use it to pay for something and disappear into that universe... or perhaps I should be institutionalized...
One would need to have the applicable trivia knowledge in order to know the answer to this puzzle, so I think it belongs in the Trivia category.
