Detective Ultimatecub knocked on the door. A woman answered.
"Thanks for coming. I am Hannah Brown and my husband Sam is dead. I was woken by a loud scream at around 5am. I was sleeping upstairs and he was sleeping downstairs. I can't sleep in the same room as him because he snores. When I heard the scream I went down and entered Sam's room. I wasn't quick enough to catch the killer before they escaped somehow. He had been stabbed in the chest and still had a knife sticking out of him. I was devastated. I called you immediately."
"Can we go and investigate the crime scene?"
Hannah led Ultimatecub and the chief to a bedroom in a room adjacent to the main entry hall. Sam's bedroom was very close to the front door. Sam Brown was lying on his back, dead, and had a knife sticking out of his chest. There was a lot of blood on the bed. On the floor were his T-shirt and trousers which he had been wearing before he went to bed. In the trouser pocket were a mobile phone, a wallet containing a credit card, a £10 note and a few coins, and a small notepad. Nothing else was in the room except a few books on a shelf.
"Can we have some information on what Sam did recently?" asked the chief.
"Sam and I were having a late night out at the pub. There was a drunk man in the pub that got into an argument with Sam. We walked home and got back at around 4:30 in the morning. We were very tired. We went straight to bed, and I was only woken by his scream at around five. Sam was always very careful, always attempting to make sure he never got locked out of his house, or others breaking into the house. I suggested leaving keys under the doormat, but he wouldn't hear of it."
Ultimatecub and the chief examined the house. There did not seem to be anything out of place except for Sam's body with the knife.
Ultimatecub suggested a way that the murderer could have made their way into the house. Later, the drunk which Sam had argued with was found guilty. How had the killer broken in?

Hint
Remember what Sam was like.Answer
The killer had pickpocketed the house keys from Sam while he was in the pub. The clue was in the items Sam had in his pocket. Nowhere in his room were the keys. Since Sam would always keep keys with him (based on his wife's statement) they would have had to be stolen somewhere. Because Sam's room was very close to the front door, the killer would have had time to escape the house before the wife could catch him. You may ask how the couple entered the house if Sam didn't have his keys? Hannah had used her keys to open the door. Sam had been so tired, he had forgotten to check his keys.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

Good one, thanks for sharing.
Ooh! Very clever!
It's impressive how you were able to use this one clue to answer the question of the mystery satisfactorily, without faulting in your logic. Nice job
The solution is simply something out of the blue.
I thought that they must've left their keys in the lock. You know how people have to put their keys in their lock, unlock it and take it out again? Think as if the Browns did it but never took out their keys. Thus the guy Sam got into a squabble with at the pub could simply walk into the house as the Browns being as zonked as they were unaware their keys were still in the lock and murder Sam.
But no. HOW COULD WE KNOW HE PICKPOCKETED THE KEYS? HOW? I demand an answer. Until then, it gets a boring and hard rating from me.

I was just about to show the answer and it clicked in my head about him not having the keys in his pockets since he's so secure (; lol
Sorry, gotta agree with Neon. Your logic has many flaws. First, it was obvious that the killer got the key from Mr. Brown. I believe everyone assume that. How it wasn't important, if while fighting he dropped them and being drunk he didn't realized it or if the guy pickpocketed him... Ultimately the murder got the keys and followed them to the house in order to murder Mr. Brown.
Now, the "they used her keys" part is too farfetched. I mean: being careful as he is (like a mania), do you think he wouldn't try to use his keys? After all thats the reason he carried them around. but like, it's not mandatory for him to have just used his wife's keys. Hence, the pocket part where no keys are to be found isn't really a clue. One can simply deduct he lost them or just removed them and put somewhere else in the house... I think your riddle needs to be corrected where logic is concerned. The idea wasn't bad, just the logical process was not really accurate. Thank you
