Another one for number 6 could be French Franc but since the Euro came in a couple of years ago it's no longer an often used phrase (OK maybe it is in France but how should i know)
I guess 1, 8 & 9 are Americanisms as I have never heard them used.
#1 relates to companies that sell alcohol. #8 deals with Christmas and might be more American. #9 is a breed and I don't believe limited to USA.
I like it Fish well done
Eight of them were easy but I vaguely remember #8 while I've never heard of #9. Amazing how many compoud words have the same first 2 letters!

I loved this puzzle. I had "stocking stitch" for #8 - maybe you have to be a knitter to have ever heard of it though.
Way to go! Where do you come up with something like this? Nice 1!
Well, I got most of them, only I said Bargain Bag instead of Bargain Basement. I've heard of a Bargain Basement, though. Hehe, sign seen in a British store: Bargain Basement Upstairs.
Not notoriously difficult diversion prudishly presented!
Good one I got all but #s 2 and 3 which turned out to be the easy and common ones.
I need to go to bed
I need to go to bed
Woo hoo! I got 5 right! Nice teaser!
I didn't understand the directions.... Now that I see the anwers I get it.... submit another I want another try!
nice one to wake up to. #2 can also be "common courtesy"

I was thinking common courtesy instead of common cold.

I didn't see that last comment before I posted.
Easy, but fun. I had Common Cause for #2.
I got them all right. Great one submit another. Good job.

I'm I the only one to notice that all of the answers are phrases and not compound words. The example give basketball is a compound word, however, calico cat is a combination of an adjective and a noun = a phrase.
Yay! I got 4 of em right!
good, but there are several that could have muliple answers
I totally mis read it!! I thought you had to come up with a word that meant the same as the original word...Doh
The instructions are a wee bit confusing, and don't totally make sense.. otherwise not bad..... i guess.
Even though the instructions didn't totally make sense, it was still very mucho fun I liked it b/c I am not smart enough to come up with these, so it's good to know not everyone is as deficient as I am.
I had written "common core" for #2. Is that a valid answer?
good job -- can't say I've heard of the phrase "simple simon" before, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a common phrase. Nice job

Very funny loser
I didn't understand the instructions either. Maybe it should have said add a second word that starts with the first two letters of the first word, so that the two words together form a common word or phrase. Example:
basket: basketball
basket: basketball
that was cool
huh??????

For answer two, I came up with common courtesy.
Sorry if I sound really really stupid, but I did the teaser completely wrong and I still don't understand the directions. It seems by the other comments that it is yet another of your fantastic teasers though.
Oh! I get it. **maybe it would've been better if, under your answers, you put the whole thing (like "Common Cold, Liquor License, etc." so that especially slow people like me can understand it.
Very good. I like these kind of teasers. The possibilities are almost endless...............Hope to see more of these - everywhere!
Liked most of them, but do have to agree that the directions are misleading. Especially since none of the answers are compound words like basketball.
And, is 'acetic acid' really a common phrase? It's a thing, not a phrase.
Liked the rest!

That was really good, I got a whole nother set of words that weren't the ones you used. Great teaser though!
Yay!! I got 8 right. I was thinking bargin bin for 8 and I have no clue what the acetic acid is.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who didn't get the directions. I think the example threw me off somehow.

Maybe I'm just an old Irishman but that was way easy...fun but easy.

I didn't think the directions were difficult to understand although it seems several others did from reading the comments. I got most of them. There were two I didn't get and I'm not telling which ones! Really neat!
good 1.
This was a great teaser, and your concept was outstanding. I do agree, however, that the instructions were somewhat confusing. Like a previous comment, I thought you had to find a word that started with the same 2 letter AND meant the same thing. Once I read the first anser, tho, I figured the rest out. Really great job - just need a little clarification on the instructions.
I did not understand the directions at all so I looked at the first answer and I still didn't undestand it.
hm. i got all of them...
maybe that's cuz i've seen this exact same teaser before--in the reader's digest magazine.
couldn't you come up with one of your own?

Now that was not nice.
"No thought is truly original. Every thing you will ever think has already been thought by someone else. At least once."
Even if it was somewhere else before, its nice to put it where people who don't happen to read, say, Reader's Digest, can read it and experience it too. We're here to pass on the fun to others. Picking at people kills the fun we're here for!!!!

Saucy. True this came from Reader's Digest, but most of mine are made up. Some come from there and some from other sources, but as noted above me, it is nice just to pass them along as not everyone does read Reader's Digest and would not otherwise get these. btw, how many teasers have you had accepted?

I thought this was great! Good Job!
I got 8! WO-HOO!!! With a lot of these brain teasers though, non-american don't have a chance on some things - can someone explain to me what a calico cat is?!?! I thought Calico Canvas like you use in primary school art. Also in Australia we have stocking fillers, not 'stuffers' that's what stuffed me ! Nice easy-ish one though.
A calico cat is a breed of cat with a mottled white/brown/black/grey coat.
We don't have Reader's Digest here, glad to have this one on site.
i thought #9 was calico curtains
