Brain Teasers
Alternate Dictionary Definitions I
This teaser is based on 'funny' alternative definitions a word could have if you broke the word up into its syllables and treated the syllables as words in themselves. I will provide a list of words and a list of definitions, it is your job to match them up.
They are meant to be a bit light hearted and may not have perfect pronunciation so work the words in your head a bit. Having the definitions should provide help in this regard. Also note that sometimes the 'new word' syllables may not only be using one syllable in the word.
An example would be:
Word: Contemplate "Con template": A stencil that criminals are made from.
Words:
Avoidable
Misty
Selfish
Relief
Eyedropper
Definitions:
What trees do in the spring
What the owner of a seafood store does
A clumsy ophthalmologist
How golfers create divots
What a bullfighter tries to do

This is a VERY good one!! I like it a lot.. It is pretty FUNNY!!!
Thanks . Hopefully there will be more to come.
very punny!
Careful, Jimbo ...
Calling them "puns" is a no-no. Else they'll be banned to the category of "other" (pronounced "uther" in puns-ville)
Or ... (worse) just called "bad jokes" and sent directly to the JokeSite.
Maybe we could do a nonce (made-up-one-purpose/one-use-word) and call them FAD(S) (Funny Alternative Definition) words.
Those are the ones where you "work the words in your head a bit".
Strange .... I always thought that was the definition of a good p_n.
Anyway, I'm VERY GLAD to see these language variants get snuck into Braingle, and resident in a decent category.
Great stroke, deessqqquuu ....
No "mistee" here ...

My my, you have been a busy little elf haven't you ;) ... Thanks so much. I believe they 'get in' because I am very clear in the description that some of the sounds may not necessarily be identical. The other thing is that you have a few of them and can kind of use process of elimination to help narrow it down thus making it a lot more solvable than just a single rebus type of teaser where emphasis on pronunciation is critical but of course you weren't talking about rebuses now were you ;) .
I really don't care what these easy, short and fun teasers are called! I'm sure many other members enjoy having the answers in front of their face every once in a while. We need easy and enjoyable teasers to balance out the more intense and difficult ones. Call it what you want...I call it FUN!!!
Thanks Froggy... I concur!
