Brain Teasers
A Day of Visiting
Trick
Trick brain teasers appear difficult at first, but they have a trick that makes them really easy.Trick
Today little Frederick and his mother visited a school and a family. While they were there, they saw a band, checked out the litter, and noticed a sleuth standing nearby. Later that day, they watched an army and a troop for quite a while, and noticed they were standing beside a battery. As they were leaving to go home that day, Frederick and his mother saw a party just near the den and were indeed very happy.

When I was reading the teaser i was like What the heck is this? But that was well written and different once I saw the answer! I loved it!
It was cool but how does it a trick?
that was really a good one
interesting
How IS this a trick?
Good teaser, anyway.
Good teaser, anyway.
The battery threw me off.
Totally confused me... so, good one!
Great teaser! thanks!
Well written and a most creative way of introducing all the collective nouns! Good one!
Thank you for your kind comments.
The trick was trying to work out what the family were really doing because I introduced unusual collective nouns in order to trick you...which it seems I did.

I figured it sounds more like trivia or something...
That's a very good trick teaser Jazz! Thank you once again for a terrific puzzle.
I thought it was a great trick. very well written
its all NOAH's fault
That was FANTASTIC!! Keep 'em coming!
Cute Teaser jazzmusician46
Thank you for your really supportive comments. They are really valued.
HAHAHAHA! Very good! You got me on this one.

I thought it was real easy, but it was still very fun and interesting. Great job!
Puppies in a zoo?
Yep, you got me on this one. Good teaser tho. More please?
I had an inkling that animals were involved but was not up for the encyclopedia cross checking that would have been required to get the entire answer!
Well played

I thought a group of whales was called a Pod.
I liked it! I thought whales were called a "pod" also! Aren't they? Or, are the terms used just terms that can be applied to different groups, not necessarily the only terms that can be used for those specific animals?
In any case, it was fun, AND, I actually guessed it RIGHT, yay! Thanks!

Isn't it a school of fish? Anyways, if all of the names are correct, this is an awesome teaser.
I was in the right ball park, but never got to the plate. Good one.
The only way I was able to figure this out was that ... for a change ... I looked at the category. When I saw it was a trick, I knew "something was fishy," so I reread it differently and came up with the answer.
I think the ^ "pod" comments ^ are correct ...

Good, easy one. I recognized all the animal group names, so quickly figured it out. The first sentence and start of second sentence seemed a bit awkward though, with the 2nd starting "while they were there"...
Nice one! Pretty easy. Got it before I was halfway through reading, but I must admit that I'd never heard of a sleuth or a battery as animal groups before so I was left wondering if I was right but couldn't think of anything else anyway.
I've never heard of whales being referred to as a school before but thought immediately of a school of fish.

Knowing and identifying differents names, has always been a fascination of mine. I am surprised that others have not caught on to the tricks. Keep up the awesome job!
Thanks for your comments. They are nice and constructive. I think you can call a 'bunch' of whales a 'pod' or a 'school'. Either is correct. Some of the other groups had multiple answers too; so I suppose it depends on what 'school' you went to. (Sorry...couldn't resist that one!)
This one got by me.
nice play on words
Excellent work. You have a great command of the English language.
I had seen this one already "random"ly, but never read the comments. I was expecting a lot of arguments about puppies in a zoo, and a school of whales, but even those who noticed that did not harp on it and most praised the submitter. I wish this were the norm and and not the exception to most teasers with a large amount of comments.
Didnot get it , but I enjoyed it. THX
Very enjoyable!
I got it right! I new it was the zoo by the third one, I just didn't know what all of them were.
that was ver iinformative....i didnt know half of those terms....good though
very clever teaser i wasn't even close. but had alot of fun trying.
Good one!
that was awesome! i wolud have never thought of that! and im not that smart! lol
how can fish stand?
Good one. But I only got 1 answer.
Actually, a group or herd of whales can be a school or a pod. Consider the following from www.dictionary.com:
pod2  /pɒd/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[pod] Pronunciation
–noun
1. a small herd or school, esp. of seals or whales.
2. a small flock of birds.

2. a small flock of birds.
I never even got close, well thought and presented. And I should read the Category
uuuummmmmm.......oooookaaaay???
Couldnt guess the trick at all! Totally floored! Amazing how you could link all the collectives and make a story out of them!
i lovee this!!!!!!!!!!!!!SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO kewl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow...that was great Jazz! I love ALL your teasers. They are so diverse and nicely written. Keep up the really good work!
Thank you all for your great comments. It makes writing teasers all that more fun to do! Thanks also Lorpen. You are very kind.
the first thing that came to mind was a street parade...they see a school, a family, a [music]band, litter(trash), sleuth(cop or detective), army(young marines, sea cadets,...), troop(organized group; example: the girl/boy scouts, ), battery(generator), and on their way home a party near a den( room of a house)...it all is sensable.....at the zoo doesn't connect to me, but it is a mind boggler, i'll give you that
really challenging, i thought it was a good trick
I did not get this one. really good! Nice one.
Jazz, congrats on your second TOTD! I liked this one the first time around!
Thanks Gebbie much appreciated.
very nice!
EXCELLENT! COLLECTIVE NOUNS DON'T GET USED VERY OFTEN, SO I WAS GLAD TO SEE YOUR TEASER.
I HOWEVER HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A SCHOOL OF WHALES AND THE DICTIONARY DEFINITION SUBMITTED DOES NOT SAY A COLLECTIVE OF WHALES IS A SCHOOL, IT USES THE TERM TO DEFINE A POD.
I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR CONFIRMING THE TERM SCHOOL
YOUR'S WAS ONE OF THE BETTER TEASERS I HAVE SEEN.

Thanks IMurray. Your comments are appreciated. Regarding your question about the whales, they can also be called either a SCHOOL, a HERD or a GAM of whales. Moreover, a POD of whales refers to a small school and a GRIND to a group of bottle nose whales. I hope that helps.
Very cute and well written! I like this one a lot!
got it!
Just for fun -- I'm reminded of the most comical/interesting/peculiar name for a group of a certain kind of creature...
a MURDER of crows.
teehee. (46 days till Halloween!)

Very good, but I didn't get it!
Nice use of collective nouns; how many Braingle Members make a clod??
I was trying to find them all in the wild with a Boy Scout Troop! Hhahahah didn't even think of being in a zoo! Good Job!
I dint know how thats a trick
But it is stil good
Well done
I learnt something new
Thanks

Great teaser! You have a bunch of great ones!
Thank you
i wish my local zoo had a school of whales.
very easy, but fun
very easy, but fun
Good one, Jazz! Keep em' coming! When do you plan to hit 1,000 teasers?
hahaha...in about 5 years time!
I thought that might have been it until I got to slueth. Then I had no clue!
I was WAY off, I'm not even sure what I was thinking, but it wasn't anywhere near the answer!
Great teaser!
Great teaser!
Thanks for that!
Pod of whales...amongst other things!
Coolest one I've seen yet Thanks for new words today!
My pleasure
That's a cool one. I've had no idea what to expect from it And there it was... that simple. Cool!!
I was thinking it might be a title or a line from a song, but it would have to have been a weird one.

I just visited the local zoo on friday, so for that reason the answer came to me immediately.
NICE1!!!
I was thinking fish and ants, but I never thought of animals. Very nice teaser, enjoyed it even though I couldn't solve it.
Thought about school of fish and litter of puppies but didn't put it all together. Good one!
A group of frogs is also called an army. Thanks for teaching me something new!
Not to mention they might have seen a "float" (of hippopotami) go by. Great Job!
One problem, The first one is inaccurate. A group of whales is called a "Pod".
It was way out of my league. None of it made any sense to me. Not complaining, it was just not my thing. Glad so many thought it was cool.
I must quibble on this one. Zoos do not generally exhibit sea-life. I had put down for my answer that Frederick and his mother were visiting a zoo and its associated aquarium and aviary.
Great teaser. Every zoo that I have visited luka had sea life.
a very good one but i always say that when i get it right away. a little too easy but fun.
For me, "litter" gave it away. Still a nice teaser though.
When I saw "litter" I thought of kitty litter, since I have cats - I had to read it through about 3 times before it dawned on me that they were at the zoo! Fun teaser, Thanks for submitting!
How do fish stand?
nice, fun, easy
Very entertaining teaser even though I did not get it. I thought they were bird watching.
Nice fun teaser Jazz, as always, thanks!
Your puzzles are so well contrived & written, I wish others would take pointers.
As a lover of nature, this was right up my alley BTW.

Fun, easy and entertaining teaser. I did not get this one in 2015, but this time I got it right away.
Good one. I got it, although I thought some were a bit of a reach to have at the zoo... like whales and possibly all the fish. I would've replaced some of those with others, especially since you missed a "murder" of crows. That one would've fit into the story quite nicely! Still good, though. Very original.
That was very good! I think I actually got this one! I've heard of a 'sleuth' and a 'battery' before so I was only slightly weirded out.
Some collective nouns are absolutely ridiculous, like an 'unkindness of ravens' or a 'blessing of unicorns'. But they must be so fun to make into brain teasers! Thank you for this!

How about a "murder of crows", GlitterBox? That's the creepiest one yet! Very cute teaser, though! It was "litter" that put me on the right track.
