Brain Teasers
Word Fusion 14
Each statement describes two words that when fused together create an unrelated word. The clues do not necessarily indicate the order of the two words. The pronunciation of the new word is not necessarily the same as the individual words. Example: This is the oldness of a tablet (pill + age = pillage).
1) This is the loud and wild talk of a mongrel dog.
2) This is hair from a gymnastics surface.
3) This is only frozen water.
4) This piece of lumber is made of stellar material.

Nice job. It's harder than it looks.
Better than most
I found it hard. I got some of the individual words, but not the answers.
A real challenge. I got all but the first one - couldn't think of "rant".
Kudos on a fine teaser.

A star isn't "stellar material"... that's like saying a pie is "pastry material". I think the author si focusing less on clever wasy to clue us in and more on obtuse ways to baffle us. (No better clue than "hair" for a tress? Cur as a dog as opposed to a human?)
Well no, a star isn't stellar material, but it certainly seems to me that it is "made of stellar material," just as a pie would be said to be "made of pastry material." As for "cur," the original meaning of the word referred to dogs; the use for humans is fundamentally metaphorical. I also fail to see the problem with the clue for "tress."
I thought this was an excellent brain teaser. Kudos, cnmn!

A very fine teaser. I did not do well with it because I did not realize you could put the last clue in front of the first and was trying it wrong. When I looked at the answer, I felt stupid, but it was a good one regardless.
Only got justice-good brain stretching, regardless!
Wow. This time around I got them all. I must have been tired the last time I tried this one.
