Brain Teasers
Missing Letters
Customer services at RightWrite headquarters received the following letter recently. Luckily their top puzzle solvers were able to determine the meaning and help Mrs Miggins. Can you work it out what her problem was?
Da S,

hs ls aa n k ccl.
As can s, hs ls a mssng fm hs dcmn.

Answer
The letter was written on a typewriter which has a problem with the top row of letters - they did not print. The letter should have read:Dear Sir,
I would like to complain about the top row of my typewriter.
These letters appear not to work correctly.
As you can see, these letters are missing from this document.
I would be very grateful if you could correct this problem forthwith.
Many thanks,
Mrs Miggins.

I hope we were supposed to determine the problem; not decipher the whole thing
Am i right in saying L is not on the top row? I think so - therefore in the word correctly your just done it as cc not ccl! Otherwise this is great and well thought out!
it DOES say ccl, and you are right, L is not in the top row. that is why I included it in the letter. If you check, it DOES say ccl.
Nice teaser! I couldn't get it!
I like this teaser, personally. o speedy: All you had to do was figure out the problem. I included the "translation" of the letter so that you could see how it worked.
Nice work... and I got it!
muchas gracias
Very well-thought, thank you. Though it did take me a while to figure out I wasn't supposed to decipher the whole thing!
Early in the morning an I'm trying to give my brain a strain. Good teaser.

Silly me, I was trying to figure out the whole letter of complaint to see what the problem was. I gave up after the first few words. Really, really good teaser, even if I missed the whole point of it. Thanks for posting, you got my brain going this morning.
weird but great
Good teaser. I SHOULD have got it, but I didn't.
I figured it out by the first line and the last two. (Admittedly, I also tried to decode the whole thing.)
This was very well done, I didn't realize that all of the missing letters came from the top row, but somehow I got most of the message anyway. I liked this one very much. Thanks !
als hav sam blm, Dhad
if the top row was not working correctly then why the letter I in the first line of her letter?
Isn't "I" in the top row?
Isn't "I" in the top row?
disregard last comment
It was the number 1, not the letter I. It also could have been substituted with the small case letter L. Just a couple tricks we picked up in typing class in High School.
Trying to decode the whole letter is more fun! I got everything except the words "appear not to" and "forthwith". Once I figured out the top row problem, I also realized you could spell "top", "row", and "typewriter" with only the top row... That was awesome.
haha g--d --as--
I figured out what Ms. Miggins' problem was pretty readily, but I also was trying to decode the letter and was disappointed that I could only get bits and pieces! So I was successful without even realizing it!!
Very clever - thanks!!

I have deduced that Bunnee is like a bad virus that won't go away and that he or she enjoys our comments and suggestions to him or her, and basks in the fact that he or she is very annoying. It only serves to the adding of more vitriolic remarks. Therefore what I suggest is that we all stop reading his comments and just skip over them and do not reply. MOve on to the next comment after his or hers!
You are absolutely correct, Babe.
Ignoring me or demeaning me is MUCH easier than discussing this with me logically and factually.
I must admit, though, you are very perceptive in terms of my feelings on the matter.
I am enjoying the ride tremendously.

Right on Babe.
I loved this puzzle - as I wrote in 2011 I thought it was clever.
I also think BB is going to a lot of trouble to entertain/tweak us and I appreciate that. I think it might be boring without his or her comments. But mostly I'm amused by the negative responses by other irate readers.
Have a nice day!

Nice teaser, got hung up on a few things but most of it was easy.
BB 02 I, for one, enjoy your comments, even though sometimes I have to read them a couple of times to try to figure out what you are trying to say.
Thank you GW. Thank you VERY much.
Finally .... a reasonable "voice in the wilderness".
All I'm trying to do is to get people to think about Braingle (the VERY best language site EVER on the web) and think of ways to keep it healthy.
Yes ... thanks again.

Enjoyed the teaser though I found it very difficult and could not get much of it.
Nobody uses a typewriter anymore.
Great teaser!
I figured out the problem, although I did not get every word, as some were full words that were missed. I got the gist, though.
