King Tut
King Tut died 120 years after King Eros was born. Their combined ages when they died was 100 years. King Eros died in the year 40B.C. In what year was King Tut born?
Answer
He was born 20 B.C. There were 120 years between the birth of King Eros and the death of King Tut, but since their ages amounted to 100 years, there must have been 20 years when neither existed. This would be the period between the death of King Eros, 40 B.C and the birth of King Tut, 20 B.C.Hide Answer Show Answer

I didn't really understand this one... But I might just not be getting it...
at no point do you state that they were ever alive at the same time. this makes no senseto me. If I am just missing the obvious please let me know as I am always willing to learn.
Bell, the teaser makes perfect sense to me. They are not alive at the same time at all. Since there are 120 years between Eros' birth and Tut's death, and sum of Eros' and Tut's age is 100, there is a span of 20 years when neither of them is alive. This is the time between Eros' death and Tut's birth. So Tut was born in 20 B.C.,20 years after Eros' death. Seems straightforward to me!
"King Tut" is commonly used as an abbreviation of "King Tutankhamen" who reigned over Egypt from 1333 to 1323 BC when he died at the age of 18. ----- No "King Eros" is known to history, in Egypt or anywhere else. Eros was the God of Love in ancient Greek religion. ----- In 40 BC, Cleopatra was reigning over Egypt, which was dominated by the Roman Empire.
Whoa, whoa whoa. Wait a second. I don't understand the "combined ages" part of this question, because, well... if Eros died in 40BC, at the age, lets say, 50, then king Tut must have been 50 as well, and to die 120 years after he mustve been born in, um, 30AD, but you can substitute any number, getting different answers every time. Unless I am missing it, please explain.
Within the range of possible ages, you can substitute any number for King Eros's age and get the answer. Say Eros was 60 (Then Tut was 40). Now Eros must have been born in 100 BC and Tut died in 20 AD. Subtracting 40 give 20 BC.
Now say Eros was 50 (Then Tut is also 50). Now Eros was born in 90 BC and Tut died in 30 AD. Subtracting 50 gives 20 BC - same answer!
Good Teaser!

Yeah, I don't know what my head decided to do, but upon re-reading it, I realize that the answer is obviously (almost trivially) correct. I just let myself get distracted.
