Nice one. But, doesn't a "double dog dare" mean that the one who does the daring does it first - or is that a triple dog dare? If at first you don't succeed - dare, dare again!! Ha..Ha..Ha! This one for some reason tickled me so I added it to my favorites. Thanks for the laugh...
Mornin' froggy ...
I just looked it up on a couple idiot ('scuse ... IDIOM) sites and the 'experts' (but what do they know, huh?) say the 'double', 'triple', etc. simply adds emphasis to the dare; as in such an exchange between rivals BtB and FtB; BtB, 'I dare you', FtB, 'I double-dare you', BtB, 'Well, I TRIPLE-dare you'., on and on and on ...
But ... it COULD have the reciprocity connotation you mention, in your part of the globe; wherever in the world THAT is!!

Badbunnee:
Have you ever watched the inane move "Christmas Story"? In it, one boy dares another to put his tongue on an icey pole on the playgrounds. The boy replies by double dog daring the first who hesitantly accepts. Of course, his tongue stuck to the pole like glue. Like I said, the movie was somewhat out there...
By the way, my part of the world is California - yes I know there are some rather strange goings on out here. But that's what makes life interesting - isn't it!!!

Hi, deadeye ...
Thanks for coming in, having a look-see, making your comment and voting (if you did).
I go to one of the websites that list idioms or "sayings" and pick one I like. Then I think of different ways to make a "word-picture" out of the saying. Sometimes it works ... sometimes it doesn't.
If the editors "see it" the same way I "see it" (which is NOT often), then it will get through and be published, here.
If you want more help, give me a PM (click on my name) and I'll help you do one.

hehe another cute one
i haven't heard the phrase "double dog dare" though
we do have straight old normal double dares here in oz, which means that *both* the people have to do the thing being dared... though i suppose it can also be used to add emphasis to a comment
