The Fontaine sisters are seamstresses by trade. They have been commissioned to create as many 2 by 3 feet rectangular Jolly Roger flags as they can for the pirates in their village, so Loretta Fontaine has gone out to buy cloth to embroider.
Dark cloth costs $150 a foot and comes in a roll five feet wide. It can be bought in any length (even down to the inch). She has a total of $1,260 to spend on the cloth.
How many WHOLE Jolly Roger flags will they be able to make?

Answer
Six. If you divide the $1260 by 150, you get the length that can be bought, 8.4 feet, so there will be a rectangle of 8.4 by 5. If this is cut into 2 rectangles, 8.4 * 2 and 8.4 * 3, from one rectangle, 2 can be cut, and from the other, 4 can be cut, making 6.Hide Answer Show Answer

I don't understand this teaser. How many neopoints are there to a dollar and exactly what is a neopoint anyway?
Neopoints and $$$ are exactly the same
fair enough, but the teaser is impossible to solve unless you were aware of that fact. I looked up currencies on the net and couldn't find Neopoints. it should have been explained in the body of the teaser.
I don't believe how much a Neopoint is worth to the dollar has any relevance to the outcome of this brainteaser. Furthermore, I would like to add that a Neopoint dosn't exist.
Yes I see the problem with the neopoints! It says you have neopoints but the price is $.
How is the answer six though?
Does a whole flag include a patchwork job? I didn't think so and I got five.
Where does the other one come from?

AM i missing somehting? I see the length, but i dont see the width.
It does make the answer different by making the price in $s and not in neopoints. BTW: Neopoints are from the website of Neopets. This riddle was taken from Neopets.
I got the answer correct, but I have to agree with mad-ade (for once). I was trying to figure out the amount I could buy with dollars, but couldn't figure neopoints (or whatever they were) to the dollar.
I guessed that $ and Neopoints were the same,
but tried to figure out if I could squeeze an extra
flag in by putting 5 flags in a 6x5 rectangle,
and squeezing another two flags into the remaining
2.8x5 strip by angling them on a diagonal.
This was suggested both by the irregular length
and by the (coincidence) that 2 flags together
can form a 4x3 rectangle that has a 5' diagonal.
Alas, this is not possible. If it were,
I would rate this teaser higher.

If all them money (i don't care if its N's or $ but agree it should have been made clear) is spent on dark cloth, how are the skull and cross bones going to be added? With the given information we can only make jolly roger backgrounds and not complete flags and the teaser requests. If this is a sample of neopets ( or whatever its called) I'l stick to Braingle
I find it odd no one has mentioned Loretta would only spend $1200, for 8 feet of fabric. The extra 0.4 feet (by 5) create enough excess to piece together a 7th flag.
The wording of this teaser along with the comments make it one of the most incomprehensible postings on this site. At this point in time, there is no reference to Neopoints, indicating that the teaser has either been edited or less likely that these are sarcastic remarks alluding to the fact that the teaser was stolen from the Neopets site (where they presumably use neopoints).
Apart from that, it does not say that the flags must be made of one whole piece of cloth; it simply says whole flags. Here is my solution.
Buy 8.4 metres (x 5 m) of cloth. From 6 m of the cloth you can cut 2 flags 3m wide and 3 flags 2m wide making 5 flags.
This leaves a piece 2 m by 2.4 m. Now cut a 2m by 3m flag from this piece. This should leave 2 rectangles remaining. One is 2m by 2.4 m and the other is 3m by 0.4 m.
From the 3m piece cut 5 strips of 0.6 m by 0.4 m. Now turning these strips sideways and laying them next to each other we have a rectangle 0.6 m by 2 m. This can be sewn to the 2.4 m by 2 m cloth to make an additional 2 m by 3m flag.
Answer 7 flags (naturally since 7 x 2 x 3 = 5 x 8.4 exactly).
