Pardon my ignorance, but why do you need cards to make a hand?
Nice teaser, although it wasn't too hard. JQPublic, in many card games, the cards you hold are called a hand.
When you play cards - it's called dealing a hand (of cards). I loved this teaser - I didn't guess it though!

Although designs do vary, most common designs of playing cards, including those used in casinos, have two additional pips on each of the face cards. So the number of hearts is 87.
1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10 = 55 pips on the spot cards
2 pips on the Jack, Queen and King = 6
2 suit identifiers in the corners of each card = 26
55+6+26=87

If you want to get technical. They also are not alive, but there are 4 jacks, 4 queens, 4 kings, and 2 jokers, and they have a heart in them. So add 14 more.!!!
Very good teaser. Easy, but sometimes that's necessary!
If you REALLY want to get technical, in most card decks, the royal cards (King, Queen & Jack), are wearing outfits that are decorated with whatever their suit is, so you would have to add those hearts as well. However, the number of hearts probably differs from deck to deck, so it would be impossible to give a specific number.

As stated (and debated) by many others, the clue regarding the # of hearts is is misleading as it differs from deck to deck. I have decks from several casinos and I am not even sure they are all the same (I will have to go check).

A deck of "Standard" Bicycle playing cards has 87 hearts in it.
Or 61 if you don't count the two hearts in the corners of each card.
I looked at six different brands of cards and only Kem cards had hearts decorating the robes. Other suits had pips decorating the face cards' robes. Most decks have 87 hearts - 81 plus 6 by the head of each face card. European cards frequently have a heart in each corner - so that's 26 more hearts in Europe. Fun puzzle!
