Brain Teasers
Claw Machine
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
I'm playing on a claw machine at the seaside, trying to win a stuffed toy. On one particular shot, I accidentally completely miss the toy I'm after and grab hold of one underneath it. The claw lifts that toy about two feet, and then blatantly drops it. Far from being annoyed at this, I'm actually delighted.
Why?
Why?
Hint
I WAS slightly ticked off for a second that I completely missed, but through sheer dumb luck it ended up working out well for me.Also, this did actually happen to me once, so the solution isn't anything outlandish.
Answer
The toy I wanted was leaning right over the prize chute. When I accidentally lifted up the toy underneath it, it tipped the one I was after into the hole.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

Nice one. Now nice that it worked out for you
A fun story. I enjoyed hypothesizing solutions. Thanks for giving this to us.
It seems there are many possible solutions to this situation. I'm not sure how one is any better than another. it reminds me of the riddle from Tolkien, "What have I got in my pocket?"
I did not consider the actual solution. That was a nice surprise.

Really? I thought I made sure there was only one.
Can you give me a couple of alternative solutions, so I can fix that?

Couldn't an alternative solution be that the drop (rather than the lift) of the other toy moved the desired toy into a more favourable position, which resulted in your delight?
Hmm. I guess if the toy I was after was sat upright, and the other toy knocked it over when it dropped, perhaps...
Yeah, you're right. I'll go and fix that.
Any other alternate solutions I should know about?
