Crack the Code II
Jesse James' lesser known brother, Eddie has also decided to take up robbing banks for a living. He is unfortunately a little slow and has forgotten to bring the dynamite to blow open the safe!
Using logic, the following clues and a large amount of patience, can you figure out the 10 digit number to crack the safe?
*All digits from 0 to 9 are used exactly once.
*The sum of the 2nd, 5th, 6th and 8th digits is a single digit number.
*The 4th digit is a perfect square.
*The 3rd digit is 1.
*The sum of the 4th and 7th digits is a perfect square.
*The value of the 10th digit is twice that of the 2nd.
*The product of the 4th and 6th digits is equal to that of the 10th and 2nd digits.
*The 5 is next to the 6 but not the 4.

Hint
The easiest failsafe way to solve this is to draw a grid with all the numbers from 0 to 9 in each position, and cross them out as they are eliminated by the clues. You may need to revisit each clue a few times...!

That was fun - not to easy, not too hard!
Fun! Like rose said.. not too easy, not too hard.
This was fun! Now where's all the money?
It all fits together nicely without too much stress. Nicely crafted.
That's fun Thanks.
Is there not a second combo:
8-3-1-9-4-0-7-2-5-6?
Is there not a second combo:
8-3-1-9-4-0-7-2-5-6?
That was a good one.
Unstumped the "second combo" you mentioned is not possible because the product of the 4th and 6th digit would not equal the product of the 2nd and 10th digit. Had it been the sum of the 4th and 6th digit being equal to the sum of the 2nd and the 10th digit then your combination would hold true.

Unstumped, I think your combination is the right one because the 2nd and 10th numbers equal 9 and with the 4th number being 9 the only possible answer for the 6th would be 0 so that the 4th and 6th would equal 9 also. The code they have has the 4th & 6th equaling 11 and the 10th and 2nd equaling 9.
Thanks for all the comments, hope the teaser kept you busy 4 a while!
Unstumped and BGCTM, the key to your question is that the PRODUCT is refered to and not the SUM...

I think that 8319427056 and 7319428056 are both answers.
Did I miss the clue that forced 8 to be in the first position?
Did I miss the clue that forced 8 to be in the first position?
nevermind, i did miss the clue about the 4th and 7th positions adding to a perfect square.
Welldone - just difficult enough to be fun. One suggestion: in the last clue remove one "is" and also insert the word "number" before 5, so that it reads "the number 5 is next to...". Otherwise it is a little confusing - one might think you are referring to the 5th digit in the code rather than the number 5.
Thanks for the great comments!
I've submitted the changes as suggested - thanks!

Great teaser! I got it without pulling out my hair. Very satisfying. Chica34, refer to the comments of "unstumped" and "swischoc4" the clue about the 4th and 6th digit won't hold because 9 times 0 is 0.
didnt like it....sorry....
XIEXIE NI!
PLEAS CONTINUE SUBMITTING TEASERS, I ENJOYED THINKING FOR A CHANGE.
GOOD JOB!

That side of my brain doesn't work right.
Just right to start my day. Thanks
I had no idea even how to start to figure this one out. Even with the hint. I guess I'm jut not a logical person. I do recognize that this teaser must have taken a long time to come up with, so have to say good job!! You stumped me.
Great teaser. If I would have read the clues right I may have done better. Oh well!! No excuses. I will just have to try harder next time. It was definately a good way to start the morning.
I loved this one! I'm usually more of a language teaser person, but I really did like using the logic in this and felt so good after getting it right! Thanks!
very good peanut, it took me a whole sheet of paper and at least 10 min. to figure this out.
Great teaser even though my brain didn't want to cooperate!! Way to go!!
Wonderful teaser ...but too difficult for me!
This is my favorite kind of teaser! It was fun, and took me maybe five minutes to go through. Keep making ones like this!
cool good job i loved it. a little on the easy side like 40% hard and 60% easy

yes i am a little stumped and if someone could help me out that would be great....b/c the answer states 8319427056....which doesnt follow the rule:*The product of the 4th and 6th digits is equal to that of the 10th and 2nd digits...and i got 8319407256....so if someone could explain this to me...ide apprechiate it.
Feb 04, 2007
ohh....product :-/....gotcha...nvm...ty
Really enjoyed this one. I love logic puzzles , and puzzles with numbers are always a hit with me. It was fairly easy, but I needed paper and pencil to solve it. Keep them coming.
I'm lazy when it comes to these type of teasers. I gave up after getting 3 numbers, but hey the 3 I got were right! Good brain workout for those who hung in there!

good teaser....but just a thought.....if jessie's brother eddie is "slow" enough to forget bringing dynamite to blow up the safe to a bank robbery....i seriously doubt he'd beable to use those clues to figure out the safe combination
Sorry, I know this a good teaser, but it was not my cup of tea. I did not even attempt this one but I can tell you put forth great effort. Good job.
Now this is a great teaser!
It was able to be solved with a definite answer and wasn't so difficult as to remove the fun factor. I enjoyed it very much!

That was pretty great!
But at 1st i got a combo of 8-3-1-9-4-0-7-2-5-6...idk maybe i'm wrong...

THE ANSWER IS INCORRECT. IT SHOULD BE 8319407256. THE ANSWER OF 8319427056 IS INCORRECT BECAUSE THE PRODUCT OF THE 4TH AND 6TH DIGITS IS NOT EQUAL TO THE 2ND AND 10TH DIGITS. DOESN'T ANYONE CHECK THESE FOR ACCURACY??
Thanks for all the great comments!
To those who suggested an alternative solution and sylk1971 who refers to the apparent lack of accuracy, I can ASSURE you the editors check the solutions thoroughly before approving a teaser. The solution as given is the ONLY CORRECT solution...
Clue 7 states that the PRODUCT of the 4th & 6th digits (i.e. 9 x 2) is equal to THAT (meaning the product, NOT the SUM) of the 2nd and 10th digits (i.e. 6 x 3).
Simple hey?!?!

I loved this!! Of course, if we're wondering about the slowness of the bank robber, we should wonder even more about why someone left a bunch of instructions on how to crack the code to the safe.... but ANyways!
Anyways, my way of solving it, I gave the digits of the code letter names.. so I was solving for A, B, C, ..... up to I. Yes, you saw that right, I. I miscounted. I realized that there was a Jth place after I got stumped by the last clue, because it didn't help me decide between the last two digits... but then I realized my error, fixed it, and got the right answer. Whew. I loved that too much to screw it up that badly!

LOTS of fun!!!!!!! Loved it!!!!
Didn't require too much patience, though!! lol it was perfect

AGGHHHHHH, NOOOOOOO!!!!
I also thought I got it (8 3 1 9 4 0 7 2 5 6), but with a different answer.
How did I read "product" as "sum"?
AGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
Other than that, awesome teaser.

WEll, it took me a while but I finally got it. That was fun. There aren't too many teasers that I hand out to friends and students, but this was one of them. REally made you think but it was definitely solvable. Thanks!!!
Logic - not my strong suit but eventually got it. Thx for all the thought you gave to teaser. Need to build "grey matter" up.
Meant my brain matter, not yours Peanut.
i got 7 out of 10 right with:
4-3-1-9-5-2-7-0-8-6
close enough
4-3-1-9-5-2-7-0-8-6
close enough
I love this one, definitely a favorite. The fact that I was able to solve it definitely boosts my approval rating .
Very nice teaser. As was mentioned before, not too easy and not too hard.
Agreed.
EZ PZ!! But a WHOLE lotta fun! Great teaser!!
sylc1971 is correct. The answer is wrong for the reason stated. This needs to be corrected.
I am horrble with numbers but it was fun trying to figure it out
Nice 1! Took me a while but got there in the end with the right answer. Mooi gedoen!
Feb 04, 2010
The answer given is wrong! The right answer appears to be 8319407256 (or do 9+0 not equal 6+3?
Feb 04, 2010
Interesting.
LOVED LOVED LOVED this teaser!! It was absolutely perfect, and anyone that knows how to read and understands the difference between a product and a sum can see that there is only one solution - the one given by peanut!! Perfect
Wow that was challenging I didn't quite understand the grid, in the hint, but I got it by trying all combinations hehe
Wow. I think that took me 30 minutes to one hour to figure out without the hint (had to use paper and pencil). Nice job!
I do not like these kind of teasers so I did not even try. Others said the same thing so I am not alone. Sorry! Glad for those of you who liked it.
I'm with Babe, didn't care for it. Though I enjoy logic/logic grids this one had way too much math to try to figure out at 5:30 in the morning.
I don't like math teasers, but this one I could answer right away.
"Using logic, the following clues and a large amount of patience, can you figure out the 10 digit number to crack the safe?"
"No"

"No"
That one woke my brain up. Good one. Hi GW. Keep warm.
I LOVED this one! I'm not going to say how long it took me, but it was really satisfying once I finally solved it!
Also, I am dismayed by how many people can't distinguish between "product" and "sum!"

As most people felt this was a good teaser, I'm sure it was, but definitely not my cup of tea. Glad there were a few that agreed with me.

Fun puzzle, but the answer given here is wrong (8 3 1 9 4 2 7 0 5 6)
In the clues it says that the sum of the numbers on position 2 and 10 are equal to the numbers on position 4 and 6.
Here that is: 3 + 6 = 9 and 9 + 2 = 11
Therefore the answer should be:
8 3 1 9 4 0 7 2 5 6

NO, it says product 9 x 2 = 18 and 6 x 3 = 18
not sum which would be adding the two numbers together.
831907256 can not be correct. the product of 9 & 0 would be 0 .

This was a great teaser - I liked it very much!! My old brain needs this kind of workout occasionally. Those who confused "product" with "sum" should not be so quick to assume that they are right and the given answer is wrong! - If I come up with a different answer on a puzzle, I will go back and read carefully to see where I goofed, and if I can't figure it out, I will ask for help and someone will set me straight. This is a site for stimulating our brains and learning something - not for arguing that "I am right and you are wrong!!"
Thanks again for a great teaser!!
Thanks again for a great teaser!!
Loved this one! I think logic teasers are probably my favorite I didn't have as much trouble with it as I thought I might. I definitely think I figured it out quicker than I would've a month ago! Took me like 5-10 mins
Amazing! Just like the first person said- Not too easy, not too hard! Just fun! And I completely agree with thecatladycac, not just for this teaser but for many of the teasers on this site. Before I comment I always assume I'm wrong. It's saved me some embarrassment and also helps me get more of these correct!
Same as my earlier comment.
I have two answers with the 7 and 8 switched. 7319420856 & 8319420756
jeRussell - Both of your answers violate the 2nd clue which states..
"The sum of the 2nd, 5th, 6th and 8th digits is a single digit number."
7319420856
3 + 4 + 2 + 8 = 17 (a two digit number)
8319420756
3 + 4 + 2 + 7 = 16 (a two digit number)
"The sum of the 2nd, 5th, 6th and 8th digits is a single digit number."
7319420856
3 + 4 + 2 + 8 = 17 (a two digit number)
8319420756
3 + 4 + 2 + 7 = 16 (a two digit number)
well done
Awesome job! Looked really challenging but it was definitely manageable. thanks for the nice break and happy birthday!
I don't understand why people comment that they don't like that kind of teaser. That has no constructive value. If you don't like this kind of teaser just move on. Save your comments for describing whether it's a good teaser for its kind. This was good but I had to get out of bed for paper and pen to solve it.
Thanks for this gr8 fun teaser Peanut!
Maybe next time, you can include the definitions of: 'Product' & 'Sum', for the benefit of those puzzlers who don't know the difference?

Maybe you can understand that it our prerogative to answer any way we please that is not hurting anyone. It says at the top of the page, "Comments." It does NOT say "Good comments." I do not criticize you for anything you say or do. Why attack me and the others who do not care for the teaser?
meh.
That was fun but it was hard.
Enjoyed the teaser. It looks more complicated than it really is.
That was one of my most favorite ones ever. Tricky, but nothing that had me beating my head on the wall. Great procrastination from work for 5 minutes! (6 now that I wrote this comment )
