Brain Teasers
Curtail 4
When you curtail a word, you remove the last letter and still have a valid word. You will be given clues for the two words, longer word first.

Answer: The words are Start and Star.
1. Position; observe -> Compete
2. Introductory textbook -> First in rank
3. School subject -> Floor covering
4. Written composition -> Show displeasure

6. What person (objective) -> What person (subjective)
7. Close together; slow to learn -> Lairs
8. Therefore -> Unit of energy
Bonus: Take the eight curtailed letters and form a one-word anagram; you will find an assignment.

Isn't redo to do again?
"Do again" is too obvious of a hint because it includes half of the answer.
Fun, most easy, a few more challenging, but I'm not complaining. I liked this teaser.
Good one! It seemed a lot tougher than previous teasers but still a lot of fun!
Harder than usual, and I needed the hint for a few of them. Makes a nice change when these are really a challenge, thank you.
I enjoy this kind of teaser. I was stuck on 1 and 4. I believe that the definition for view should be observe, not observing. I was tring to think of a word for compete that ended in "n" (removing a "g"). Also I think "book " is too general for a written composition. Books can be dictionaries, picture books, notebooks, etc. I is what is in the book that may be a written composition. I still liked the teaser, though.
I meant "It" is what is in a book---
Some pretty tough ones and some easy ones. I can't say I agree with everything, either, but overall, this is a good teaser, and I especially liked the idea of throwing in the bonus!
Using the word "vie" in one of the answers is ridiculous as it's a French word meaning end.
And it's a stretch calling "book" a written composition, which makes you think of an essay or book report.

"Vie" is an English word meaning "compete". It also happens to be a French word, (meaning "life" not "end") but I don't see how that is relevant.
Nice, though I agree that "observing" is a bit misleading.
I used facet and face for number 1.
It was okay. Number 4 was not too good a definition. I am like someone else that said book is a little much for "written composition". Otherwise I give it a thumbs up.
Tougher then other "curtail" puzzles. Nicely done.
I needed hints on most, but wound up getting all but one with them. I thought I was being slow, due to lack of sleep, but happy to see it really Is a little harder! I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I laughed when I read the comment about "vie" being unfair as it is a French word, especially since the poster had no idea what the French word meant in English (for the record "fin" is the French word for end. IF we cannot use words that come from other languages, then I guess we can no longer use that word either (poor fishies what will they use to swim now?).
Anyway, I enjoyed it, not having all the words with the same letter added a level of difficulty.

Some tougher ones, I needed the hint for #4, and couldn't get #2 even with the hint. Good job, fun teaser
relatively easy, but overall excellent!!
Sorry, I didn't enjoy this teaser, and some were a bit of a stretch!
Fun, enjoyable and challenging teaser; I got them all and the bonus. I got half with the hint and the others without it.
